What are the advantages of mine monorail locomotives with drive wheel polymeric rims?

The potential use of mine monorail tracks are conditioned by the following factors: low payload ratio of the train; reduction of the mine workings cross-section area due to transfer of
auxiliary transport to the upper part of the workings; high operational safety; as well as the possibility of dismantling the track in the unused sections and subsequently installing it in new mine workings. The use of rubberized rollers in the drives of mine monorail locomotives enables the coefficient of adhesion of the wheel with the monorail to be increased. The researchers established that an increase in the carriage mass from 20 to 47 kN leads to 32 % less durability of a monorail locomotive drive wheel rim (from 8700 to 5900 hours).

We present the articles of the third issue of scientific journal "Mining Science and Technology” (Russia) for 2024:

Interesting studies have been conducted in the field of assessing the geotechnical stability of rock masses.

Using the calculated ratings, the rock masses of ore bodies and host sediments were evaluated for stability (classes/categories have been assigned), and the optimal method and parameters of workings support were determined. The geotechnical database accumulated during the research process provides the feasibility of calculating alternative ratings such as MRMR, RMi, GSI, etc., without the use of transient equations.

Artificial intelligence technologies for predicting dust emissions from mines

PM2.5 in OPCMs is a serious occupational hazard to miners’ health. It can cause respiratory, lung, cardiovascular, and cancer diseases. Historical reports indicate that increasing air PM2.5 pollution concentration by 10 ΞΌg/m 3 results in an increase in lung cancer rate by 36 %. Meanwhile, OPCM PM2.5 emissions measured in this study ranged 10 to 90 ΞΌg/m 3. These are really hazardous levels for the health of miners. Therefore, accurate air PM 2.5 pollution prediction is of crucial importance in terms of occupational health and selecting solutions to reduce OPCM PM2.5 pollution. Researchers proposed the novel HGS-FLNN model for predicting PM 2.5 pollution in OPCMs with an average accuracy of 94–95 %.

This paper presents data on the assessment of the readiness of auxiliary mine rescue teams in Russian coal mines. A survey of professional mine rescuers was conducted across all units and platoons, focusing on key aspects of auxiliary team operations. The results, based on expert evaluations, revealed the main challenges in training auxiliary team members and highlighted areas for improving the regulatory and methodological framework for mine rescue tactics.

How to improve the efficiency of the ventilation network of a coal mine during emergency situations?

When simulating an explosion of a methane-air mixture (firedamp), the excess pressure is calculated taking into account the gas content of rocks in terms of free combustible gases, the length of a blast cut, the size of the area of increased fracturing, and the lower explosive limit of methane. Based on the proposed principle of the parameterization of emergency models, as an example, a model of fire and explosion development in existing extended dead-end workings (more than 1000 m long) passing coaxially to each other at different heights was developed.

How to control the gas hazard pattern in underground workings after blasting?

Determining the sources of hazardous and toxic substances released into mine air, their gas composition, as well as providing each such source of pollution with the required amount of fresh air are important issues in terms of ensuring normal healthy and safe working conditions for miners. An article published in the journal "Mining Science and Technology" established the time-dependent changes in toxic gas concentrations after blasting, specifically at the working face, in the return ventilation current, and near the booster. In order to assess the reliability of the data obtained, the volume of released carbon oxides was calculated based on the data of gas analyzers and chemical reactions of explosives decomposition during detonation, depending on the types and weights of the explosives.

We present the articles of the fourth issue of scientific journal "Mining Science and Technology” (Russia) for 2024:

The study assessed the impact of water inflows on the strength characteristics of the rocks of the Lovozero rare-metal deposit developed by the Karnasurt mine. he data on water inflow into Karnasurt mine workings, which exploits two ore bodies of the Lovozero rare-metal deposit, are considered. Statistical processing of the data on water volumes collected by the mine over the latest 4 years was performed, with assessment of their changes during a calendar year. The quantitative indicators of the changes in the strength characteristics of rocks due to water saturation were determined. It was found that the water saturation led to a decrease in the rock strength by up to 10–20%, especially for compressive strength values.

We present the articles of the first issue of scientific journal "Mining Science and Technology” (Russia) for 2025:

Scientists conducting research at the mines of the VVerkhnekamsk potassium-magnesium salt deposit (VPMSD) discovered an interesting pattern: gas-air surveys show that the volume of gaseous impurities in the main ventilation drifts is often significantly lower than in the working areas of dead-end workings. This phenomenon of decreasing gas concentrations along the ventilation airflow path is explained not only by the dilution of impurities due to fresh air leaks but also by the chemical neutralization of gases through interaction with the potash rock mass. Previously conducted laboratory studies confirmed the ability of sylvinite (NaCl + KCl) to absorb toxic and combustible gases. This paper presents the results of field studies at one of the VPMSD mines, where the dynamics of gas impurities in the workings were studied, taking into account both chemical processes and ventilation factors. Specialists measured the concentration of combustible and toxic gases in seams of different mineral compositions and analyzed the influence of potash salt properties on the gas composition in long dead-end workings. Laboratory analysis of the collected air samples, performed by chromatographic method using the "CHROMOS GH-1000" instrument, made it possible to quantitatively assess the contribution of gas neutralization and dilution processes to the reduction of harmful impurity concentrations. The results showed that in long dead-end workings of seam AB (100 m or more), the content of gaseous impurities consistently decreases as the distance from the dead end to the mouth of the working increases. The study also examined other factors influencing changes in the gas composition in mine workings.

We present the articles of the first issue of scientific journal "Mining Science and Technology" (Russia) for 2025:

Scientists have analyzed energy efficiency of mining operations, focusing on ventilation fans and hoisting machines as the most energy-intensive equipment. The study examines main ventilation fans and hoisting systems at Molibden mine, proposing optimization measures to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Research methods included analytical approaches for ventilation system evaluation. Findings show inefficient fan operation with excessive energy use, suggesting motor replacement could save 4.9 million rubles annually. Analysis of hoisting equipment recommends modern multi-rope systems for better performance. Data reveals inverse correlation between productivity and energy use - 10–15% output increase reduces energy consumption by 2–5%. Implementing automated controls and optimizing equipment utilization can significantly enhance efficiency. These results are applicable to other deep mining operations.
