New Year is a favorite holiday for children and adults, which gives new hopes, dreams and joy. As they say in Russia: “as you meet the New Year, so you will spend it,” so you need to move on to the next year only with a good mood.
In Russia, it is customary to put up a Christmas tree at home and decorate it with toys, gingerbread cookies and garlands. Children know very well that Santa Claus will come on New Year's Eve and put the desired gifts under the Christmas tree.
New Year's feast is an integral part of the holiday in Russia. The table on this day has always been famous for abundance: it always has Russian salad, herring under a fur coat, champagne, tangerines and red caviar. During all the preparations, people love to watch their favorite cult films.
Five minutes before the New Year, the whole family gathers at the TV and waits for the president's congratulatory speech. At midnight, when the chiming clock is heard, people make wishes, open champagne and begin the celebration of the New Year.

Who is the Snow Maiden? ❄️
In Russia, the main characters of the New Year are considered to be the Father Frost and the Snow Maiden. The snow beauty gained wide popularity only in the 19th century after the release of a fairy tale, a play in verse by Alexander Ostrovsky about a doll made of snow, which later came to life.
According to legend, the Snow Maiden lives in the kingdom of Berendeyevo. In fact, there is a village Berendeevka, located in the Yaroslavl province. The relationship between the Snow Maiden and Father Frost changed. If in Ostrovsky's fairy tale the Snow Maiden was the daughter of Father Frost, now she is believed to be his granddaughter.
The heroine has her own residence in Kostroma. The hostess always greets guests with a traditional treat - bread and salt. After the Snow Maiden introduces the guests to the assistants - the cat Bayun and a couple of the household spirits - brownies.
Snow Maiden's residence has a special Ice Room. This is a very cold place, where the temperature is constant all year round - minus 15 degrees. Guests are offered Russian fur coats and felt boots. The Ice Room itself is small. Icicles hang from the air conditioner, and the light bulbs on the ceiling are covered in snow. The room is decorated with ice figurines.

New Year at Cape Horn
The team of the round-the-world expedition "On the way of Russian sailors around the world" dreamed of celebrating the holiday at Cape Horn - a symbolic place for every sailor.
The path was not easy: headwind, weather conditions and fields of algae created obstacles for travelers. Nevertheless, they were able to achieve the goal on time, despite the difficulties.
The vessel adequately withstood the onslaught of Cape Horn. In 2023, the crew plans to sail the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

This is a direct reference to the Julian calendar. Thus, the Old New Year is the one that comes according to the old calendar style.
According to old Russian traditions, on this day the countdown of the new agricultural year began. The evening before was called "generous". At home, they set the table and prepared treats that were shared with others, it was also considered a good omen to get hired on this day.
On the Old New Year, they believe in some signs. For example, do not borrow and lend money, otherwise you will spend a year like this. It is not worth celebrating the holiday only in the company of women, it is believed that then he will be unhappy and lonely. If the sun rises high in the morning, the whole year will be happy. There are a lot of pork dishes on the festive table, then the year will be profitable. In addition, on the eve of the holiday, you should not get out - you can “sweep out” luck along with the garbage.

Russian language students have just celebrated it at the Russian House in Kolkata
On 14 January 2023, Institute of Russian Language, Russian House in Kolkata organized a concert in celebration of the Old New Year. Maxim Aleshin, Senior Consul of the Russian Federation in Kolkata and Sergey Shushin, head of the Russian House in Kolkata, addressed their wishes to the students and felicitated the Russian guests of the evening - indologists and Bengali language scholars Tatiana Dubyanskaya, Darya Vorobyova and Alisa Kalina. The latter is also a blogger, a talented vocalist and a blind learner of several languages.
Madhabi Bhattacharya, director of the Institute of Russian Language, presented a short video about the New Year traditions in Russia. Alisa Kalina performed songs in three languages, accompanying herself on the piano. Students of the Russian language courses performed songs and dances, turning the evening into a peculiar musical battle.
The festival, which is also called the Orthodox New Year, is an informal traditional holiday, celebrated as the start of the New Year by the Julian calendar. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the Old New Year falls on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar. The tradition comes from the last century. The Russian Orthodox Church continues to celebrate the New Year, Christmas and all other Orthodox holidays according to the Julian calendar.

🎄 The Russian stove has arrived in Kolkata
The interactive New Year's fairy tale "Emelya and the Pike" was presented by Russian compatriots in Kolkata.
On December 22, the Russian House in Kolkata brought together young Russian compatriots and Indian children. A New Year's interactive fairy tale with games and a traditional round dance around the Christmas tree was prepared by the Indian Association of Russian Compatriots.
The kids tried themselves not only as actors, but also as artists, sending their works to the exhibition “My New Year's Dream - 2024”. The youngest spectator was not yet a year old, and the exhibition of paintings was decorated with a work by a 16-month-old abstract artist.
🎅 From the hands of the director of the Russian House, Sergei Shushin, all little dreamers received books in Russian language and sweet gifts and toys from the real Father Frost and Snowmaiden.
Also, compatriots were presented with an exhibition of New Year's cards from the famous Soviet artist Vladimir Zarubin. And what would New Year be without family crafts! Young compatriots made soft bunnies filled with candies at a master class on the ancient knotting technique.
In the spirit of the upcoming Christmas, the compatriots organized a fundraiser in support of the NELC School for the Blind Society in Cooch Behar District and the purchase of cakes made by the students.

Интерактивная новогодняя сказка "По щучьему велению" была представлена соотечественниками в Калькутте.
22 декабря Русский дом в Калькутте собрал маленьких российских соотечественников и индийских детей. Новогоднюю интерактивную сказку с играми, танцами и традиционным хороводом вокруг ёлки подготовила Индийская ассоциация российских соотечественников.
Ребята попроовали себя не только в роли актеров, но и художников, направив свои работы на выставку "Моя новогодняя мечта - 2024". Самому юному зрителю не было ещё и года, а выставку в том числе украсил рисунок 16-месячного абстракциониста.
🎅 Из рук директора Русского дома Сергея Шушина все маленькие мечтатели получили книги на русском языке, а сладкие подарки и игрушки - от самых настоящих Деда Мороза и Снегурочки.
Также соотечественникам была представлена выставка новогодних открыток известного советского художника Владимира Зарубина. И какой же Новый год без семейных поделок! Игрушку "Зайчик с конфетами" сделали юные соотечественники на мастер-классе по старинной узелковой технике.
В духе предстоящего Рождества соотечественники организовали сбор средств в поддержку школы NELC для слепых округа Куч Бехар и закупку кексов, изготовленных учениками.

In winter, the region is considered one of the most beautiful. Trees are covered with snow and frost, and on Mount Polyud they are pressed to the ground.
❄🌬In the Ural Mountains you can ride snowmobiles among frosty rocks and snowy forests. You can also get to the Pillar Grotto - a cave-permit for ancient people. Here you can enjoy a picturesque view of nature.
📌Kostroma
🎅The residence of Grandfather Frost is located in Veliky Ustyug, and the house of Snow Maiden - in the cozy town of Kostroma. During New Year's time, residents of different parts of the country tend to come here. Here also lives Snow Maiden's assistant - snow-white cat Stepan Timofeyevich, who welcomes guests without days off and lunch breaks!
Around the main Christmas tree of the city, on Susaninskaya Square, festive events, concerts and fireworks are held.

Зимой регион считается одним из самых красивых. Деревья покрываются снегом и изморозью, а на горе Полюд их придавливает к земле.
❄🌬 В Уральских горах можно покататься на снегоходах среди морозных скал и снежных лесов. Можно также добраться до столбового грота — пещеры-приюта для древних людей. Здесь открывается живописный вид на природу.
📌 Кострома
Резиденция Деда Мороза располагается в Великом Устюге, а дом Снегурочки — в уютном городке Костроме. В новогоднее время сюда стремятся жители разных уголков страны. Здесь же проживает помощник Снегурочки — белоснежный кот Степан Тимофеевич, который встречает гостей без выходных и перерывов на обед!
🎅 Около главной елки города, на Сусанинской площади, проходят праздничные мероприятия, концерты и запускаются салюты.
