The situation for media reporting on the attack on #Ukraine is dire; access to impartial information in #Russia vanished. Also in the rest of the #OSCE region #mediafreedom declines. But our principles are not open to interpretation, I said today. Read ⬇ https://t.co/YzVkPT9oKC

State Duma’s decision to make spreading “false” information about and “discredit” anyone fighting on Russia's side in the war against #Ukraine a criminal offence, is yet another deplorable attack on an already dire situation of freedom of expression and #mediafreedom in #Russia.
Shocked & saddened by the attack on @repubblica journalists near #Kherson in #Ukraine, killing #Bohdan_Bitik, wounding Corrado Zunino. My heartfelt condolences go to Bitik’s family and strength to @corzunino. Reporting on truth and facts should never end with a life taken away.
I am dismayed by the attack on Volodymyr Sedov, chief-editor of Visty Ananyivshchyny newspaper by unknown assailants in #Ukraine. Pleased to hear that the police has opened criminal proceedings – justice needs to be done swiftly and Sedov’s safety secured. #Noimpunity.
This week again showed how dangerous it is to report from the battlefield, in this terrible war that the #RussianFederation unleashed on #Ukraine, with both professional correspondents & others falling victim to the violence. Journalists must be protected. https://www.osce.org/representative-on-freedom-of-media/513313

Communiqué by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media: A call to protect media freedom during armed conflict and to stop…
Communiqué No. 1/2022, issued by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media
Recent attacks by #Russia on #Ukraine that also hit hotels where media reside, left @ZDF producer Svitlana Dolbysheva injured & @anadoluagency property damaged. It again shows the danger media run in this Russia-waged war. I reiterate: journalists must be able to work safely.
Yesterday’s hacking of several #Ukraine media, incl. @ukrpravda_news, @ApostropheNews, @LIGAnet & @TelegrafComUa, to spread false information, is concerning. It erodes trust in institutions & in media & harms democracies by limiting citizens’ ability to receive accurate news.
Today marks the 2nd yr. of #Russia’s war on #Ukraine, a time of profound human suffering & destruction. It violates all #OSCE commitments, incl on #MediaFreedom & endangers journalists & our information spaces. I will continue to support Ukraine in addressing these challenges
In a world where accurate information is under siege, functioning, independent media & the empowerment of citizens with critical thinking skills is our best defense to disinformation, I said today during the Int. Conference on Media Literacy & Media Self-Regulation in #Ukraine.
Today at the #Ukraine conference, we emphasized the crucial need for international organizations to further synergize in developing & implementing Media Information Literacy measures. Ensuring that societies are well-informed is paramount for the survival of our democracies.
Yesterday’s gun attack in #Kyiv on Aidos Sadykov, co-founder of YouTube channel Base, is deeply shocking. I trust that the #Ukraine authorities will conduct a thorough investigation & ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. #NoImpunity
Deeply shocked by the death of Kazakh journalist Aidos Sadykov, co-founder of the YouTube channel Base, recently shot in #Ukraine. The killing of media workers is an attack on #MediaFreedom. Justice must be served #NoImpunity. My sincere condolences to his family & colleagues.
