There is a clear correlation between #MediaFreedom, democracy & security, I said today in my address to the @OSCE Security Committee. The causal link is undeniable: when media freedom deteriorates, our common security is at risk. There can be no security without media freedom.
At today’s event ‘Empowering Youth to Safeguard the Civic Space’ I have united with @osce_odihr, @oscehcnm, @oscepa, @OSCE Secretariat & @OSCE24MT to amplify youth voices. They play a vital role in peace & security, bringing fresh perspectives to tackle #MediaFreedom challenges
I reiterate my call on the authorities of #Russia to end the crackdown on independent media and journalists. The recent designation of @MoscowTimes as ‘undesirable’ organization yet again flagrantly contradicts #OSCE commitments on #MediaFreedom.
#MediaFreedom is critical for ensuring greater security. We depend on quality media & public interest information to strengthen resilience, to empower people & to protect democracy, I said today at our high-level panel, No Security Without Media Freedom
Today’s powerful Big Tech creates complex media dependencies that risk undermining democracy. #MediaFreedom is deeply intertwined with economic & political systems — we must ensure technology serves the public interest.

#MediaFreedom is deeply rooted in the concept and principles of democracy. It provides quality information, that enables people to express views and be part of the glue that holds our societies together, said @OSCE_RFoM Officer-in-Charge Philippe Tremblay at the conference.

In addition to @OSCE_RFoM assisting participating States in implementing their #MediaFreedom commitments, close cooperation with civil society is essential for fostering positive and sustainable change at the local level.

At a time when the importance of #MediaFreedom, as a core pillar of comprehensive security, is being questioned, we must collectively uphold the Helsinki principles to rebuild peace, said Officer-in-Charge Philippe Tremblay at the Parallel Civil Society Conference. #OSCEMC24
OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media is pleased to partner with OSCE Chair-in-Office 2024 to organize a high-level side event titled "More Than News: #MediaFreedom for Democracy and Security" at #OSCEMC24 to 👇
🔴Examine the role of free media;
🔴Address various challenges;
🔴Promote concrete solutions.

Today, we face a convergence of profound challenges:
➡️The significant influence of big tech platforms;
➡️The transformative impact of AI;
➡️ The destabilizing effects of disinformation.

It is imperative to support journalists who uphold highest ethical standards, often at great personal risk. Their commitment to reporting relevant facts underpins the essential link between democracy and security, said Officer-in-Charge Philippe Tremblay.
Today I had a constructive meeting with @NorwayMFA @EspenBarthEide focusing on:
➡️Norway's strong political & financial support for @OSCE_RFoM;
➡️Impact of geopolitical challenges on human rights, peace & security;
➡️Good practices in promoting #MediaFreedom across the #OSCE.

📽️ Last week I conducted my official visit to 🇳🇴. Good exchange of ideas on how to support #MediaFreedom as an integral part of #OSCE's comprehensive approach to security.👇
Good to meet with @SallaNazarenko from @Journ_liitto & colleagues from Helsingin Sanomat @hsfi in #Helsinki. We discussed the increasingly complex working & economic environment for journalists & edited media, as well as the influence of Big Tech on #MediaFreedom.
AI shapes our information landscape based on Big Tech’s business priorities, amplifying harmful content, including hate & antisemitism. We need healthy information spaces, rooted in #MediaFreedom & public interest, said @barbara_trionfi at the #OSCE Antisemitism Conference.
I urge the Republika Srpska National Assembly to refrain from adopting the “foreign agent” law & take action to protect media & NPOs, in line with #BiH's international human rights obligations & OSCE #MediaFreedom commitments. Any legislative process should be open & inclusive.
