Morning Bites (part 3)
📌The growth rate of China’s new internal combustion engine car sales accelerated to 15% YoY in July, from 8% YoY in June. The revival of China’s car sales might have been driven by the implementation of government support measures. Given that the country’s automotive sector accounts for some 26% and 17% of global autocatalyst Pd and Pt demand, respectively, this might be a positive factor for PGM demand
📌China’s new EV sales were up 117% YoY in July (vs. +129% YoY in June). As with ICE cars, government support measures contributed to the growth in EV sales. Robust EV sales in China are positive for the demand for battery metals (nickel, lithium and cobalt). In 2021, China accounted for 49% of global EV sales (passenger cars and light-duty vehicles)

🚘Global EV sales (passenger cars and light-duty vehicles) were up 63% YoY in July (vs. +57% YoY in June), according to Rho Motion. As we have written before, China’s EV sales remained strong in July: up 117% YoY vs. +129% YoY in June, supported by government stimulus measures. However, US & Canada EV sales decelerated in July to +12% YoY, from +26% YoY in June, while EU sales continued to fall: -2% YoY in July, after the 6% YoY decrease in June. The weak dynamics in the EU might have been caused by inflationary pressures. However, globally, the robust performance of EV sales is positive for the demand for battery metals (nickel, lithium and cobalt)

🚘China’s authorities have decided to extend EV purchase tax exemptions until the end of 2023. China began exempting EV buyers from a 10% purchase tax in 2014 and initially planned to finish the initiative by the end of 2022. However, to help the economy recover from various anti COVID measures, the exemptions were extended. Given that in 2021 China accounted for 49% of global EV sales, this might be a positive factor for the demand for battery metals (nickel, lithium and cobalt). In recent months, the country’s new EV sales experienced solid growth: up 104% YoY in August and up 118% YoY in 8mo22 -- despite the COVID lockdowns and unfavourable economic conditions

🚘Global EV sales (passenger cars and light-duty vehicles) increased 70% YoY in August, after the 63% YoY growth in July, according to Rho Motion. The growth was mainly driven by the 104% YoY increase in China’s sales (vs. +117% YoY in July). US EV sales also saw a strong performance, with the growth rate accelerating to 30% YoY in August, from 13% YoY in July. At the same time, EV sales in the EU grew 5% YoY, reversing from the 2% YoY decline in July. The strong performance of global EV sales is supportive for the demand for battery metals (nickel, lithium and cobalt)

Morning Bites (part 1)
🚗💨Internal combustion engine (ICE) car registrations in the EU fell 4% YoY in 3Q22 from the low base (after the 25% YoY decline in 2Q22). Petrol car sales were down 3% YoY in 3Q22 (vs. -23% YoY in 2Q22), while diesel car registrations dropped 5% YoY (vs. -29% YoY). Diesel cars constituted 28% of ICE car sales in 3Q22 (vs. 29% in 2Q22). Sluggish ICE car sales are unfavourable for PGM demand
🚘EU and UK EV sales rose 5% YoY in 3Q22, reversing from the 2% YoY decline in 2Q22. BEV sales rose 16% YoY (vs. +11% YoY in 2Q22), while PHEV sales dropped 9% YoY (vs. -16% YoY). The share of BEVs in total EV sales rose to 62% in 3Q22, from 57% in 2Q22. The slight recovery in EU and UK EV sales is moderately positive for the demand for battery metals: nickel, lithium and cobalt

💍Hong Kong jewellery and watch sales rose 8% YoY in September, following the 3% YoY increase in August. The increase reflected the second tranche of consumption vouchers, distributed in late August, according to Rapaport. This might be slightly positive for diamond demand

Redwood Materials
