Installing a board to conduct an inquiry into the recent court acquittal of 2 lawyers for attempted bribery of a @TheTimesofMalta journalist in #Malta is a first step in ensuring full accountability. I will closely follow the procedure, trusting it will be thorough & transparent.
While on an official visit to #Malta, I visited the grave to pay tribute to the courageous journalist #DaphneCaruanaGalizia, who was killed in 2017 for doing her work. #Noimpunity
Engaged in a very interesting conversation with young people on (mis- & dis-) information at a conference in #Malta. Such a discussion evolves around #mediafreedom, #Democracy & our common values. So good to hear what so many people from such different backgrounds have to say.
During my visit to #Malta last week, I discussed a broad range of #mediafreedom issues, including journalists’ safety, the need for an open culture regarding access to public information and truly independent public service media. The 2nd request within weeks to leave prison for a family visit by George Degiorgio, convicted killer of journalist #DaphneCaruanaGalizia, if accorded by the relevant authorities in #Malta, will thwart the feeling of justice.
Happy to host several journalists from #Malta in Vienna yesterday. We had open and fruitful exchanges on various #mediafreedom issues & #SafetyofJournalists and the role of the @OSCE in the current geopolitical challenges that clearly affect all participating States.
