🇭🇹🇰🇪 Haiti welcomes Kenya-led multinational force offer

Haiti has welcomed ''with great interest'' Kenya's offer to lead a multinational force to restore order.

Haiti Foreign Minister Jean Victor Geneus said he appreciated the expression of African solidarity. The Caribbean nation is suffering from a surge in gang violence and is in a deep security, political and humanitarian crisis.

Earlier Kenyan Foreign Minister Alfred Mutua said a quick fix to Haiti's problems would not be possible, but the mission would aim to stabilise the situation and train a proper Haitian police force.

Mutua said the people of Haiti had suffered enough, and Kenya felt a responsibility to help its brothers and sisters in the African diaspora.

Kenya is ready to lead a multinational force into Haiti, which is experiencing a surge in violence between police and gangs, its foreign minister said on Saturday.

"Kenya's commitment is to deploy a contingent of 1,000 police officers to help train and assist Haitian police restore normalcy in the country and protect strategic installations," Mutua said.

The planned deployment from Kenya, though, is still subject to getting a U.N. Security Council mandate and Kenyan authorisations.

🇰🇪🇭🇹 Kenyan officials meet with Haiti police to discuss gangfighting force

A Kenyan delegation met with leaders of Haiti's national police on Monday, a day after arriving in the country as it assesses leading a possible United Nations-backed multinational security force to help police fight escalating gang warfare.

The 10-person Kenyan delegation met senior police staff early on Monday and will stay until Wednesday, holding further meetings with national police and Haiti's Prime Minister, Ariel Henry.

Henry's government first requested international security assistance last October, but despite repeated calls from the United Nations, the call went unanswered until Kenya said it was prepared to lead such a force last month.

🇸🇻🇭🇹 El Salvador’s congress approves sending troop contingent to Haiti

El Salvador’s Congress approved a proposal Wednesday to send a contingent of soldiers to Haiti under the auspices of the United Nations to handle medical evacuations in the troubled Caribbean nation.

Patricia Aguilera
, legal affairs director for El Salvador’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, told lawmakers it was part of the country’s commitment to the U.N.’s Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.

She did not give an idea of the size of the El Salvador contingent and lawmakers did not seem to know. They would be limited to medical evacuations because that has been their experience in other U.N. missions, she said.
