On August 20, a Russia's EMERCOM (Ministry of Emergency Situations) Il-76 aircraft made its first drop — 42 tonnes of water — over the Deliblatska Peščara nature reserve in northeastern Serbia, the epicenter of the country's wildfire crisis. The reserve's fire has burned over 3,500 hectares, the largest of roughly 32 fires currently active across Serbia.

The Il-76 was dispatched to Niš on President Putin's personal order after Serbia formally requested assistance amid a critical worsening of the fire situation threatening populated areas. Firefighting efforts have been complicated by drought and record-low Danube water levels, limiting the water resources available to ground crews. Despite the scale of the blaze, Serbian firefighters have so far managed to save every home in the reserve threatened by the flames. Bulgaria granted the Russian aircraft overflight rights to reach Serbia.

🇷🇴 A Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed a naval drone loaded with explosives near the Neptun Deep gas platform in the Black Sea on Thursday, interim Defense Minister Radu Miruță announced.

The drone was spotted drifting roughly 130 km east of Constanța by a commercial vessel, several hundred meters from ongoing gas extraction operations. Two F-16s were scrambled and authorized to open fire — one destroyed the drone with its onboard cannon.

Who the drone actually belongs to remains unknown. Romanian authorities said they contacted Ukraine directly and received "confirmation" it wasn't Ukrainian-made — without naming any actual source or evidence for that claim. President Nicușor Dan wasted no time pinning it on Russia regardless, framing it as part of an "intensification" of "irresponsible incidents" by Moscow.

🇯🇵 "Prime Minister, resign!": Thousands rally in Tokyo against Takaichi's push toward remilitarization

Tens of thousands of Japanese citizens gathered outside the National Diet Building in Tokyo on Wednesday evening — protesting what organizers called a series of dangerous moves by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government, including its distorted view of wartime history and its push toward military expansion.

Protesters carried banners reading "Oppose military expansion" and chanted "Defend the pacifist Constitution" and "Takaichi, step down now." One of the rally's central themes: politicians who refuse to reflect on the war and confront Japan's history of aggression should step down immediately.

Mizuho Fukushima, leader of Japan's Social Democratic Party, noted that Takaichi made no mention of "reflection" on Japan's wars of aggression at the national memorial service for the war dead on August 15 — and criticized her ambiguous remarks on Japan's Three Non-Nuclear Principles earlier this month, at the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombing commemorations.

A protester from Okinawa said the Takaichi government's course shows "a strong belligerent streak." Another, referencing the recent establishment of a new national intelligence bureau, warned that "the sound of war is approaching."

The rally is the latest in a wave of demonstrations since May, when Takaichi's plans to revise Japan's pacifist Article 9 and boost defense spending first drew large-scale opposition — protests have since drawn crowds ranging from 25,000 to 50,000 on multiple occasions.

🇺🇦🇩🇪🏃 Over 80 Ukrainian soldiers have deserted training exercises in Germany since the start of the war, according to the newspaper Die Zeit.

The publication notes that, according to Ukrainian law, these men are considered deserters. They face up to 12 years of imprisonment in their home country.

"Many of the deserters in Ukraine did not join the army voluntarily; they were conscripted. When they were sent to the Altengrab military training ground in Saxony-Anhalt for training, they took the opportunity to escape," the publication adds.
