๐บ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฑ UN faces "difficult" next phase of MINUSMA pullout from Mali
The second phase of the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers from Mali will be very challenging due to a tight calendar and dangerous security conditions, the UN special representative to the country said on Monday.
The UN peacekeeping mission, known as MINUSMA, has to exit Mali until December 31.
Withdrawal operations were targeted, Special Representative of the Secretary-General told the UN Security Council Monday. He said the size of the convoys, involving hundreds of lorries, and the long distances they travel over inhospitable terrain leave them vulnerable.
By September 30, about one-third of Minusma's civilian staff will have been pulled out, he said.
The second phase, through December 15, will involve abandoning six bases in northern, northeastern and central Mali.
"This phase will be incredibly difficult indeed, the terrain is difficult and insecurity is an ever present threat," he said.

Russia put forward the draft resolution to rival a text from France and the United Arab Emirates that would extend the sanctions regime and independent monitoring for another year, but also express a readiness to review the measures.
The 15-member Security Council is due to vote on both draft resolutions later on Wednesday.

The United Nations on Friday demanded an "independent" probe after dozens of people were killed in a crackdown on an anti-UN protest in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
"There needs to be an investigation and the perpetrators need to be brought to justice," UN rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told.
According to an assessment by the rights office, at least 43 people were killed, including a policeman, and 56 injured, Shamdasani said.
Shamdasani said at least 222 people were reportedly arrested, including women and children, and said that "the risk of human rights violations in such a charged context is high".

#Israel's military claimed today that it found in the basement of Al Rantisi Hospital in #Gaza evidence that Hamas used the hospital for military purposes, showing this picture as part of the evidence material. Former member of Israel's mission to the #UN has even claimed that the picture has names of fighters, who guarded Israeli detainees.
The picture is actually a handwritten calendar, made by someone who was apparently counting the days of the war to end.
In an interview on Al Jazeera, Hamas official Khalil Hayya said the hospital was crowded with displaced Palestinians before the Israeli military forced them at gunpoint to leave. https://t.iss.one/QudsNen

๐ธ๐ป๐ญ๐น El Salvadorโs congress approves sending troop contingent to Haiti
El Salvadorโs Congress approved a proposal Wednesday to send a contingent of soldiers to Haiti under the auspices of the United Nations to handle medical evacuations in the troubled Caribbean nation.
Patricia Aguilera, legal affairs director for El Salvadorโs Foreign Affairs Ministry, told lawmakers it was part of the countryโs commitment to the U.N.โs Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.
She did not give an idea of the size of the El Salvador contingent and lawmakers did not seem to know. They would be limited to medical evacuations because that has been their experience in other U.N. missions, she said.
