RT @NOAASatellites: One year before @NOAA's first #GOES satellite was in orbit, NASA's geosynchronous ATS-3 satellite captured the powerful storm system that sparked the largest recorded #tornado outbreak in U.S. history up to that time. NOAA helped transfer the satellite imagery to forecasters across the U.S. during this historic weather day.

50 years ago today, the record-breaking 1974 tornado Super Outbreak claimed 335 lives.

Find out how this devastating weather event spurred innovation, and how you can contribute to public safety today, April 3, with a #SafePlaceSelfie:

ICYWW - There has been a research request to have #GOES Mesoscale sectors ‘follow’ the Moon's shadow on Monday during the #TotalSolarEclipse. If there are no operational requests needed, this could result in a very unique dataset. https://t.co/lsYyuIaI8z https://t.co/UjjSgzC6Ti

During last week's #TotalEclipse2024, @NOAANCEI scientists created this unique solar animation from overlapping images captured by the #GOES Solar Ultraviolet Imager (#SUVI) as part of an extended coronal imaging campaign.

This campaign provides crucial context imagery to shed light on the sun's coronal temperature, density, and structure during a total solar #eclipse.

Today, the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (#SUVI) onboard @NOAA’s #GOES detected a powerful X-class solar flare erupting from the sun, which is the most intense class of solar flare. https://t.co/oCWjSQrjWk

An X2.7 flare was observed at 14/0825 UTC from Region 4087. This region has recently become active and also produced an M5.3 flare at 14/0325 UTC. https://t.co/C3IKE46Vps

There have been many reports of a #fireball streaking across the southeastern U.S. this afternoon! The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (#GLM) on @NOAA's #GOES satellites can occasionally detect these bright meteors (aka #bolides) when they pass through the atmosphere.

See the quick flash #GOESEast captured around the Virginia/North Carolina border today. #GOES19
