Today we remember the reformer of the world theater, a man whose acting system has been practiced for more than 100 years, the founder of one of the leading Russian theaters - Konstantin Stanislavsky (17 January 1863 - 7 August 1938).
Since childhood, Konstantin Alekseev (he took a pseudonym only in 1885) played in home amateur performances, often visited the circus and ballet - in other words, he was introduced to the world of theatrical art.
In 1902, Stanislavsky, together with Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, founded the Moscow Art Theater, marking a new stage in the development of theatrical art in Russia. The performances of the plays “At the Bottom” and “The Seagull” at the Moscow Art Theater made the names of Maxim Gorky and Anton Chekhov popular, and Stanislavsky himself showed himself both as an experienced director and as an excellent actor.
One of the main contributions of Stanislavsky to the world of theater was the development of his acting system. The director's main goal of training was "to bring life to the stage, bypassing the routine (which kills this life) and at the same time preserving the stage conditions."
The Stanislavsky system continues to be used by theaters and theater schools. Since 2001, actors who adhere to the principles of the Stanislavsky system have been awarded the “I Believe. Konstantin Stanislavsky."

City paid tribute to a Russian indologist and a founder of Bengali theatre
On 27 November 2022, citizens of Kolkata gathered to lay flowers to the memorial plaque to Gerasim Stepanovich Lebedev (1749 - 1817), a pioneer Russian indologist, translator and musician, in celebration of the 227th anniversary of the foundation of the first modern theatre of India. On 27th November 1795 he established a European-style proscenium drama theatre in Calcutta, that time the capital of India.
Gerasim Lebedev first came to Madras, India, as a musician in 1785 and rendered his gala presentations for two years. Then he came to Calcutta in 1787 with great cognition to get acquainted with the life and culture of the Indian people.
He translated Spanish and French dramas in Bengali language and with the help of local guides and local actors produced the first performance of "Kalpranim Sangbodol". For the first time, a play written in English, Richard Paul Jodrell’s The Disguise, a comedy in three acts, was translated into Bengali and performed on a proscenium stage – a new innovation that came with scene settings and arches, as seen in European theatres of the time.
The memorial plaque is situated on the place of Lebedev's Bengalee Theate, 37 Ezra Street, which used to be 25 Domtollah that time.

Зрительный зал главного здания Мариинского театра украшает огромная трехъярусная люстра из бронзы. Конструкция весит 2,5 тонны и состоит из 210 лампочек и 23 тысяч хрустальных подвесок. Плафон люстры окружен 12 портретами известных русских писателей – Капниста, Фонвизина, Гоголя и других, поскольку изначально Мариинский театр предназначался не только для оперных и балетных, но и для драматических постановок.
⚜️Именно Мариинский театр подарил миру классическую версию «Лебединого озера» – символ русского балета, а в его стенах служили Мариус Петипа, Матильда Кшесинская, Федор Шаляпин, Анна Павлова, Вацлав Нижинский, Галина Уланова и многие другие.

The whole family and sometimes the servants carefully prepared for them: they thought many times about how and what to play, held rehearsals, and sometimes even sold homemade tickets. Residents of the estates invited their relatives and friends to the performance.
💰 Organizing productions required financial costs, sometimes significant. Funds were obtained in different ways: they attracted “patrons” - wealthy friends, or expected “grants” - cash gifts from relatives.
This is how the writer Ivan Turgenev recalled how they prepared for the performance in his home theater: “From morning to evening there was smoke like a yoke: ballet scenes were being staged, costumes were being tried on. Noise, din, laughter, merriment!

The performance is dedicated to Marina Alexandrovna Vasilyeva, professor at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, who passed on her skills to several generations of famous soloists and prima ballerinas of the theatre.
