Our journal "Mining Science and Technology" (Russia) has opened an Online first section.
What is the essence of this section?
The Online first section presents the final versions of articles that have undergone all technological procedures before publication: all examinations, peer review, editing, proofreading, translation into English and layout. The Online first article is distinguished from the traditional published version by the absence of fixed page numbers and linkage to a specific issue of the journal. An article published as Online first should appear on the pages of the journal in the next issue.
Why is this section necessary?
The fact is that in scientific journals there is an objective editorial cycle, which is associated with the number of issues per year, the volume of output, the volume of the publication portfolio, the productivity of technological procedures, etc. Quite often, journal articles wait more than a year for publication. At the same time, many articles may contain valuable scientific information. That is why editors can present an article to the scientific community as early as possible after making a decision on publication. The article can become known to the scientific community in 3–6 months.
Can this article be cited?
Yes. In order for Online first articles to be cited correctly, it is necessary to assign them a DOI, which is what is done in our journal. In the list of references, you can cite an article without indicating the issue and pages, but indicating the DOI assigned by the editors. RSCI, Scopus, WoS identify the publication and link it to the author after the article is published.
Is it possible for the author to report for a scientific grand or scientific project with an article from the Online first section?
Probably not. It is better not to do this if this opportunity is not provided for in the terms of the grant. Consultation with the granting organization is required.
Does this mean that all articles published in the journal must first be published in the “Online First” section?
No. Only articles that have passed all technological procedures before publication appear in this section. Traditionally, this section does not contain articles that are planned for publication in the journal in the next month.
