MUHARRAM — ALLAH’S SACRED MONTH:

Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months. Muharram is so called because it is a sacred (muharram) month and to confirm its sanctity,

“Verily, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allaah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred”

[al-Tawbah 9:36]

MUHARRAM IS AMONG THE FOUR SACRED MONTHS:

Narrated Abu Bakra: The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"(The division of time has turned to its original form which was current when Allah created the Heavens and the Earths. The year is of twelve months, out of which four months are sacred: Three are in succession Dhul-Qa' da, Dhul-Hijja and Muharram, and (the fourth is) Rajab of (the tribe of) Mudar which comes between Jumadi-ath-Thaniyah and Sha ban."

WRONGDOINGS IN THIS SACRED MONTH:

Do not, therefore, wrong yourselves, with respect to these months. [al-Tawbah 9:36]

The meaning of the verse that wrongdoing during the sacred months is more serious and more sinful that wrongdoing at any other time. Wrongdoing at any time is a serious matter.

OBSERVING NAAFIL FASTS DURING MUHARRAM:

It was narrated from Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman- that is Ibn 'Awf, that Abu Hurairah said:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

''The best fasting after the month of Ramadan is the month of Allah, Al-Muharram, and the best prayer is prayer at night."

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 1613)

FASTING ON 10TH OF MUHARRAM (ASHURA):

Narrated Salama bin Al-Akwa:

Once the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered a person on 'Ashura' (the tenth of Muharram) to announce, "Whoever has eaten, should not eat any more, but fast, and who has not eaten should not eat, but complete his fast (till the end of the day)

(Sahih al-Bukhari 1924)

NarratedAisha:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ordered (the Muslims) to fast on the day of 'Ashura', and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day ('Ashura') or not.

FASTING ON THE 9TH AND 10TH OF MUHARRAM:


It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth day (of Muharram) too.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 1736)

Narrated `Aisha:
'Ashura' (i.e. the tenth of Muharram) was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the prelslamic period of ignorance. The Prophet (ﷺ) also used to fast on this day. So when he migrated to Medina, he fasted on it and ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.

ALLAAH CHOOSES WHATEVER TIMES AND PLACES HE WILLS :

The above statement explains us the importance of fasting on the day of Ashura and that Allaah bestows His generosity on His slaves at those times or in those places, by giving a greater reward for deeds done, such as giving a greater reward for fasting in Ramadaan than for fasting at all other times, and also on the day of ‘Aashooraa’, the virtue of which is due to Allaah’s generosity and kindness towards His slaves on that day…”

VIRTUE of Fasting In Allah's Month — MUHARRAM 🌱

The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked: "Which prayer is best after the obligatory prayers, and which fasting is best after the month of Ramadan?"

He (ﷺ) said: "The best prayer after the prescribed prayer is prayer in the middle of the night (tahajjud), and the best fasting after the month of Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah, Muharram."

The Excellence of Fasting the Month of Muharram & the Day of Aashooraa

‏بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab (d. 1206H) rahimahullaah mentions in his book ‘Aadaab al-Mashy ilas Salaah':

“[And it is from the Sunnah (supererogatory)] to fast the month of Muharram, the best of it being the ninth and the tenth (days). And it is from the Sunnah (recommended) to gather between the two of them (i.e. by fasting the ninth day and tenth day together). And everything that is mentioned regarding the day of Aashooraa pertaining to actions – other than fasting – then there is no basis for that, rather it is an innovation.”

Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abaad hafidhahullaah mentions in explanation:

1. That which indicates the excellence of fasting the month of Muharram is the narration of Abu Hurayrah radiyAllaahu anhu that he said: The Prophet sallAllaahu alaihi wa sallam said: “The best of fasting after the month of Ramadaan is the month of Allaah, Muharram. And the most excellent prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.” [Reported by Muslim no. 1163]

2. And that which indicates the excellence of fasting the tenth and ninth days of the month of Muharram is the narration of Abu Qataadah radiyAllaahu anhu that the Messenger of Allaah was asked about fasting on the day of Aashooraaa (10th day of Muharram), so he said: “It expiates the sins of the previous year.” [Reported by Muslim no. 1162]

And the narration of Ibn Abbaas radiyAllaahu anhumaa that he said: The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alaihi wa sallam said: “If I live until the next year, I will certainly fast on the ninth day.” [Reported by Muslim no. 1134]

— Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنهم) said concerning Ashura | ʿAbd al-Razzāq In al-Muṣannaf, (4/287, No. 7839), Sahih.

Abdullah bin Abbas (رضى الله عنهم) said:

"When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fasted on the day of Ashura and commanded that it should he observed as a fast, they (his companions) said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem."

Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Next year - if Allah wills - we will fast on the ninth day (of Muharram)."

He (رضى الله عنهم) said: "But the next year the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had passed away."

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

"If I live until next year, I will fast the 9th day (of Muharram) too."

PROHIBITION OF MOURNING IN ISLAM – He is not one of us 🚫

What the Shi’ah do on ‘Ashoora’ in the name of Hussain (رضي الله عنه) like beating their chests, slapping their cheeks, striking their shoulders with chains and cutting their heads with swords to let the blood flow are all innovations that have no basis in Islam 🚫

In the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) many of his Companions (رضي الله عنهم) died, but he never beat himself or wailed over any of them ‼

Rather He (ﷺ) said:

"He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and traditions of the Days of Ignorance IS NOT ONE OF US."

“Displaying sadness or happiness on this day (ie. the day of ‘Ashūra) are both in opposition to the Sunnah. And nothing was reported from the prophet ﷺ regarding this day except for fasting it.”
