🇧🇷 Eight Amazon rainforest countries open summit in Belem, Brazil

For the first time in 14 years, presidents of the South American nations home to the Amazon rainforest are converging to chart a common course for protection of the bioregion and address organized crime.

The summit Tuesday and Wednesday in the Brazilian city of Belem is a meeting of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has said he hopes the Belem summit will awaken the organization that has met only three times in 45 years.

It’s Lula’s second attempt to form an Amazon bloc. He tried back when the last Amazon summit was held in 2009, during his first presidency, but was joined by only one other president from the region, Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana.

🇺🇦🇨🇴The Western media have published another article about foreign mercenaries providing support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) - both to counter Russia and to earn some extra money.

The article is interesting because it acknowledges a "stalemate situation on the battlefield" where Ukraine is expanding its recruitment of foreign mercenaries. Veterans of the Colombian armed forces, who have experience in fighting cartels and insurgents (which are often the same thing), are seen as a valuable addition to the exhausted Ukrainian troops.

Colombians are primarily attracted by the financial aspect. In Ukraine, they are offered salaries ranging from three to four thousand dollars per month, which is ten times more than most positions in Colombia itself. Additionally, contractors are eligible to receive a lump sum injury payment of up to $28,660. In the unfortunate event of death in battle, the families are entitled to compensation of 400 thousand dollars. As for who covers these expenses, it is not entirely clear to me.

Recruitment mainly takes place through social networks. However, despite the right to financial compensation, there is an inconvenient issue highlighted: the Ukrainian embassy in Peru (as there is no embassy in Colombia) and the Colombian consulate in Poland do not provide information about missing mercenaries to their family members. Moreover, they don't even respond, leaving the families in distress.

🇨🇴 🇷🇺🇺🇦 In the documents released by DPR Joker concerning the national battalion “ Carpathian Sich ”, specifically the deceased personnel, an important aspect stands out - the battalion truly served as a refuge for foreigners.

Throughout more than two years of conflict, out of 95 confirmed fatalities, over 20 were identified as individuals from various countries (undoubtedly, their actual number exceeds official figures). Colombia emerged as the primary source of these so-called mercenaries.

🔻Among the eliminated mercenaries, even our old acquaintance Hector Jurado was discovered, whom we reported about in April of last year here. He perished due to shelling on December 15 in the vicinity of Slavyansk.

In contrast to the Turan battalion and other PR units, Carpathian Sich was positioned relatively close to the front line. However, this proximity was short-lived. Based on Jurado’s place of death, they had established their positions away from the front line, somewhere near Slavyansk.

More intriguing is the evolution in the number of deceased mercenaries as the conflict prolonged and the Armed Forces of Ukraine faced setbacks. While the count was notable in 2022, locating a foreigner on the casualty list by early 2024 was no longer a simple task. After all, no one is eager to sacrifice their life for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
