⚡️🇮🇹🇳🇪 Italy calls on ECOWAS to extend Niger ultimatum

"The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) should prolong their deadline for the reinstatement of Niger's ousted president", Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in an interview published on Monday.

"The only way is the diplomatic one. I hope that the ultimatum of the ECOWAS, which expired last night at midnight, will be extended today," Tajani told.

🇳🇪 ECOWAS to convene new extraordinary summit on Niger crisis

West African's regional bloc Ecowas says it will hold a summit in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, on Thursday to discuss the crisis in Niger following a military coup.

Ecowas had given the coup leaders seven days to reinstate the elected president or face the possibility of military intervention.

However the deadline passed on Sunday with no change to the situation.

🇳🇪 Niger's military government said it can't host Ecowas because of safety risk

Leaders of Niger's ruling military junta say they can't accept a high-level diplomatic visit because there'd be a risk to the visitors' security.

Delegates from the regional grouping Ecowas, the African Union and the United Nations had been due to fly on 8th of August.

But the coup leaders told Ecowas that sanctions and the threat of invasion from the bloc had created public anger, so the delegation couldn't be hosted with calm and in security. They added that Niger's land and air borders were closed.

⚡️🇳🇪🇨🇮 According to the Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, ECOWAS has given the green light for a military operation "as soon as possible". "The chiefs of staff will have other conferences to finalize things but they have the agreement of the conference of heads of state", he declared.

However, just like the warning issued by the military government of Niger about killing toppled president in case of an invasion, this statement by Ivorian president is yet another attempt to raise the stakes in the bargaining between Niger, ECOWAS and the West.

Moreover, such a statement made only by Ivory Coast president, contradicts with what ECOWAS said previously.

🇳🇪 ECOWAS said force remains last option in Niger

West Africa's chief mediator in the Niger crisis, ex-Nigerian leader Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, has told that military intervention remains the last option to resolve the situation in the country.

He said his delegation from the regional grouping Ecowas has started negotiating with military junta leader Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani and expressed hope for an amicable resolution.

Gen Abubakar told that his recent mission to Niger has "opened a room for discussion and diplomacy". Referring to the use of force, he said that "all measures will be put in place to ensure that Niger comes back to constitutional authority. It doesn't necessarily mean going to war however, nobody is planning or hoping to go to war because when you start war, you don't know the outcome."

🇳🇪🇪🇺 ECOWAS counting on the support of the EU regarding Niger

An ECOWAS delegation that included the president of the commission Omar Alieu Touray was in Toledo, Spain, on Thursday, to ask for support from the European Union.

"My visit is to explain our position and inform the various measures that ECOWAS has taken and the collaboration we seek from all our partners," Omar Touray said. "One event in a particular place affects the whole world. So that is why we find it important to talk to our partners from the EU so that they understand what we are doing and give us the support that they are able to give us."

"African solutions to African problems. We are on listening mode, we are ready to consider to study any proposal. I want to repeat the idea that President Bazoum was the only authority democratically elected in the whole Sahel," Josep Borrell said.

🇳🇪 Niger's ousted president petitions ECOWAS court for help

Ousted Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum has appealed to the West African bloc ECOWAS’s court for his release, his lawyer has said.

A suit was filed with the court on Monday demanding Bazoum's release and reinstatement as president following his “arbitrary arrest” and “violation of freedom of movement” following the coup in July, his lawyer said.

“We request in view of the violation of political rights, that the state of Niger be ordered to immediately restore constitutional order by handing over power to President Bazoum, who must continue to exercise it until the end of his mandate," he said.

His wife and son, who are also being detained by the military junta, are named in the application.

🇧🇫🇲🇱🇳🇪 ECOWAS urges Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to prioritise dialogue and reconciliation

ECOWAS is urging Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to prioritise dialogue and reconciliation amidst concerns of potential exits from the community.

The regional body which took this position at the conclusion of its extraordinary session on February 8, 2024, stressed the critical need for diplomacy and unity in the face of regional challenges.

At the conclusion of the session, Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Chair of the Mediation and Security Council, Yusuf Tuggar, said the decision of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mail to withdraw from the community has presented yet another challenge, however, members are heartened by the spirit of cooperation to resolve this challenge.

He added that “We must carry forward the momentum generated in this session and continue our efforts to engage with the concerned member states in the spirit of understanding and reconciliation”.

🇳🇪🇲🇱🇧🇫 West Africa bloc offers junta-led states six months to rethink exit

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger will have a six-month grace period after their scheduled exit from West Africa's main political and economic group next month during which the ECOWAS bloc will try to persuade them to stay.

The summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was seen as a chance to address the impending withdrawal of the three countries on Jan. 29, a year after they jointly announced they would leave in a reversal of decades of regional integration.

ECOWAS has so far failed in its goal to push them to reconsider, while the three countries in the insurgency-torn central Sahel region have set up their own alliance, sought ever-closer alignment in defence and other areas and mooted abandoning the West African currency union.

While Jan. 29 remains the official withdrawal date, the effective date for their departure has been extended to July 29 - a transition period during which mediators from the bloc will seek "to bring the three member countries back to ECOWAS without prejudice," commission president Oumar Touray said at the end of the summit.
