When Dr. Abdullah al-Nafisi visited Mullah Omar's house in Kandahar, he described it as a house made of bricks and mud. He found the country's ruler sitting on a straw mat.

Al-Nafisi asked Mullah Omar why he wasn't in Kabul instead of Kandahar to meet diplomatic envoys.

A famous story in Afghanistan during the communist era:

To mock the shepherd, he asked, "Who is your God?"

The shepherd replied, "My God is Allah."

The national officer said, "There is no God. My god is this tank."

He then pointed to a sand dune and said, "Look what my god (my tank) can do to it," and then he fired at it.

The shepherd then said, "Let me inform the jirga and our tribe's mullas about your crossing our land, and I will return to you with an answer."

When the shepherd went and informed the tribe's sheikhs and the jirga council, their response was:

"This officer is Kafir, the army is kafir, and the government is kafir... proceed to your jihad, yarhamokom Allah."

And the rest is well known.
