Zakia Shamout is the first Palestinian prisoner to give birth to a baby inside prison. She was arrested in 1971 while pregnant and sentenced to 12 life imprisonments. On February 18, 1972, she gave birth to her daughter Nadia. The child remained with her mother in prison for a year and met her mother after she was released in a prisoner exchange in 1983.

After her release in 1983, Zakia was deported to Algeria and remained in Algeria until her death in 2014.
