🗣 #Indonesia2024: On September 24, the Valdai Discussion Club, together with the National Archives of Indonesia and the Federal Archival Agency of the Russian Federation, will hold a Russian-Indonesian seminar titled “Indonesia – Russia: From the Past to the Future, History and Prospects”.

📍The event will be held in Jakarta (Indonesia).

The Valdai Club has been developing partnerships with the countries of Southeast Asia for many years. In 2015, an Asian Regional Conference of the Club was held in Jakarta. This year, the Valdai Club returns to Indonesia for a substantive analysis of both bilateral relations and the positions of Russia and Indonesia on key issues of regional security and development.

Not only representatives of Indonesia, but also guests from India and China will be invited to speak at the Russian-Indonesian Seminar. Their participation will allow the Russian-Indonesian dialogue to be integrated into the broader context of regional cooperation.

The agenda of the Russian-Indonesian Seminar is designed for one day and is completely open to the media. In addition, a press scrum will be organized after each session.

During the seminar, experts will discuss the following topics:

🔹 Historical prospects for bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia;
🔹 Geopolitical prospects for bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia;
🔹 Digital transformation in an era of global turbulence;
🔹 Relations between Indonesia and Russia in the naval sphere.

The seminar in Jakarta fits seamlessly into the strategy for strengthening bilateral ties laid down by recent high-level negotiations. Expert recommendations following the seminar will undoubtedly be used in developing further political and economic decisions in this area.

For the Russian-Indonesian seminar, Alexey Kupriyanov, Head of the Indian Ocean Region Centre at the IMEMO Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, prepared a Valdai paper titled “Maritime Geopolitics of the Pacific and Indian Oceans: A View from Moscow” on the national interests of Indonesia and Russia in the Asia-Pacific. The presentation of the analytical paper and the seminar agenda will take place at the Valdai Club’s Moscow headquarters on September 16.

🇷🇺🇮🇩 Russia and Indonesia: A Time-Tested Partnership

On September 16, the Valdai Club hosted a presentation of the analytical paper titled “Maritime Geopolitics of the Pacific and Indian Oceans: A View from Moscow”, prepared ahead of the Russian-Indonesian Seminar in Jakarta. The moderator was Oleg Barabanov, Programme Director of the Valdai Club.

💬 Lyudmila Vorobyova, Director of the Third Asian Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, briefly spoke about Russian-Indonesian cooperation, describing Indonesia as a time-tested partner for Russia in the Asia-Pacific region. She added that next year will mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations. They were especially warm in the 1960s. Today, the countries continue to embrace the traditions of friendship, trust, and mutual assistance established during the last century. Political dialogue is developing, meetings between foreign ministers and interparliamentary exchanges are held regularly, and cooperation takes place at international platforms. In the economic sphere, Russia is committed to further expanding trade and investment cooperation with its Indonesian partners; the development of a free trade agreement between the EAEU and Indonesia is in its final stage.

💬 Pyotr Skorospelov, Director of the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History, said that a special report has been prepared for the seminar based on recently declassified documents about the "golden decade" of Russian-Indonesian relations under Khrushchev and Sukarno. Interest in Indonesia arose in Moscow in the last years of Stalin's life on the wave of foreign policy's turn to the East after the People’s Republic was established in China. Khrushchev fully embraced the interests of the Global South, expanded the geographic scope of this policy, and provided a material basis for it. In terms of economic aid, Indonesia was a priority for Khrushchev, roughly on par with Egypt. The USSR assumed that Indonesia was a regional power centre and a potential great power, and built its policy on this premise.

💬 Alexey Kupriyanov, head of the Indian Ocean Region Centre at the IMEMO RAS and the author of the paper, emphasised that Russia, probably for the first time in its history, is in a situation where the main focus of its economic and political efforts is directed to the East. This was not the case even during the Cold War. This poses the task of developing a plan of action for dealing with Asia. Kupriyanov pointed out the key role of Indonesia in terms of maritime geopolitics, as it controls all the straits of the Malay Barrier. "It holds the key to all passages from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean," the expert noted. The situation in the region is currently becoming increasingly tense, and against this backdrop, Indonesia's importance will only increase.

🇷🇺🇮🇩 Openly About the Past, Optimistically About the Future

On September 24, the Valdai Club held a seminar in Jakarta, titled “Indonesia – Russia: From the Past to the Future, History and Prospects,” organised jointly with the National Archives of Indonesia and the Federal Archival Agency of the Russian Federation. The seminar was attended by experts from both countries, as well as India and China.

The event consisted of two thematic blocks, dedicated, respectively, to the history of bilateral relations and their current state in a broad geopolitical context.

The wide range of topics discussed at the seminar and the high intellectual level of the discussions contributed to strengthening mutual understanding, and turning to the past reminded us of the historical roots of Russian-Indonesian friendship, which has withstood all the tests of the 20th century.
