⚠️ The Ukrainian crisis could become a prologue to a period of protracted conflict.
Taiwan, the East China Sea, the Middle East, and Latin America appear to be potential zones of military and political crises.
The transforming world order has reached a point where the United States is being forced to reckon with the reality of its declining influence.
The future of the world order now depends on whether the major powers can form a new system of international relations based on a sober assessment of national interests and their balance, writes Andrey Sushentsov, Programme Director of the Valdai Discussion Club.

The House the Dollar Built: The United States and the Decline of Liberal Hegemony
In December 1941, a meeting took place in Moscow between Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden. The minister did not know the details of the meeting’s agenda and had to guess what the Soviet leader might inform him about.…
📆 ANNOUNCEMENT: On December 12 at 4:00 pm Moscow time, the Valdai Club will host an expert discussion dedicated to the end of Brazil's presidency and the beginning of South Africa's presidency of the G20.
The Brazilian presidency of the G20 was characterised by a decrease in the politicisation of its work, despite what Western countries have been trying to introduce since 2022. The final documents of the summit in Rio de Janeiro, which ended on November 19, are moderate in tone. On the other hand, the ambitious goal of the Brazilian presidency to strengthen the fight against world poverty and redistribute the world's wealth provoked a mixed reaction and did not find support among the developed countries.
For the fourth year in a row, the G20 chair will be from among the states of the world majority. Before Brazil, Indonesia and India chaired the group. On December 1, the presidency passed to South Africa. Throughout these years, there have been discussions about how non-Western countries can direct the G20's focus toward the problems of the developing world.
❓What has been achieved during this time?
❓What have the world's majority states brought to the G20 agenda?
❓What are South Africa's priorities for the coming year?
❓What are Russia's interests in the G20?
The participants in the discussion will try to answer these and other questions.
🎙️ Speakers:
🇷🇺 Viktoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council Centre, Vice-Rector of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Russia's Sherpa in the Women's Twenty (W20)

🇧🇷 Marco Fernandes, Editor of Wenhua Zongheng International, Master of History, Doctor of Social Psychology (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil)
🇿🇦 Mikatekiso Kubayi, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Global Dialogue (IGD) at UNISA (South Africa)

📆 ANNOUNCEMENT: On December 16 at 11:00 a.m., the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow will host a discussion on the situation in Syria.
The situation in Syria has changed rapidly and radically. After 24 years of rule, on December 8 Bashar al-Assad resigned as President of the Syrian Arab Republic. Meanwhile, the armed opposition occupied Damascus. The following day, the Israeli army moved eastward into Syria from the occupied Golan Heights. As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said, Israel intends to maintain control over the region in the future.
Russia has played an active role in resolving the civil conflict in Syria in recent years, and these changes concern it directly. Russia is now in contact with all factions of the Syrian opposition, and is calling for a renunciation of the use of violence and the resolution of all issues through inter-Syrian inclusive negotiations with UN participation.
❓What led to the rapid regime change in Syria?
❓How can international organisations influence the normalisation of the situation?
❓What will the new Syrian government look like?
❓How will the role of external players involved in Syria change?
❓What are the goals and prospects of the Russian presence in Syria and the Middle East as a whole today?
❓To what extent will the Syrian changes affect the entire region?
The panellists will try to answer these and other questions.
🎙️ Speakers:
🔹 Vitaly Naumkin, Academic Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, Professor, Full Member of the RAS
🔹 Jamil Qadri, leader of the Moscow platform of the Syrian opposition, secretary of the ‘People's Will’ party
🔹 Taha Özhan, Research Director, Ankara Institute

🌐 Amid Geopolitical Tensions: Will the G20 Keep the Global South Agenda?
On December 12, the Valdai Club hosted a discussion dedicated to the end of Brazil’s presidency in the G20 and the beginning of South Africa’s presidency. Moderator Oleg Barabanov noted that Brazil’s year brought serious, qualitative changes. He proposed to discuss its results and plans for the next year.
💬 Marco Fernandes, editor of Wenhua Zongheng International, called the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro a major diplomatic victory for Brazil. He emphasized that Brazil had achieved a lot in terms of the agenda. Fernandes believes that the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is the most important initiative, because, according to FAO, 733 million people on the planet still suffer from hunger, although humanity produces much more food than it needs. “This is essentially a crime,” the analyst said. Against this background, questions arise about the credibility of the G7, whose projects for the development of the countries of the Global South are proclaimed with much fanfare, but quickly fizzle out.
💬 Mikatekiso Kubayi, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Global Dialogue (IGD) at UNISA, presented a view from South Africa. He pointed out the need to ensure continuity with Brazil and consistency of approaches. Speaking about South Africa’s plans, he noted that such areas as the fight against climate change, the fight against inequality, food security, reform of international organizations and global trade infrastructure, digital transformation and investment are especially important for it as an African country.
💬 Marina Larionova, Director of the Center for International Institutions Studies at RANEPA and Russia’s Sherpa in the Think 20 (T20), sees a significant achievement for Brazil in making another step towards depoliticizing the G20 documents. As a result, the problem of geopolitical confrontation remained outside the final document of the summit, which made it possible to formulate a constructive approach. She believes that Brazil has contributed to the consolidation of the influence of developing countries in the G20 and the strengthening of the G20 as a platform for economic cooperation.
💬 Viktoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council Centre, Vice-Rector of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Russia’s Sherpa in the Women’s Twenty (W20) noted as a positive moment that the G20 has been led by countries of the Global South for the past three years and the next chairman is also one of them. The question is whether real resources and finances will be behind the big promises. The G20 is important because it continues to bring together the BRICS+, the G7 and the growing regional powers. From this perspective, the value of the group is unconditional, she stressed, making clear that “at least some dialogue is taking place here,” unlike many other venues.
