🇪🇺 The European Union’s Green Deal must be criticised for three reasons:
▪️ it is dogmatic, because it does not provide for alternative scenarios;
▪️ it is economically highly problematic, because it burdens industry in Europe with costs and uncertainties and therefore restricts its international competitiveness;
▪️ it is technologically immature and unrealistic: neither the market-ready technologies nor the financial means to implement the Commission’s goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 are available.
Pursued under the concept of the Green Deal, the energy transition has been one of the strongest and most damaging factors influencing the economy of the Federal Republic of Germany, and therefore the economy of Europe. This policy is primarily being pursued by Ursula von der Leyen’s European Commission and Olaf Scholz’s cabinet.
Any measure that hinders the supply of affordable energy to Europe, such as the continuation of sanctions or a premature withdrawal from long-term gas supply contracts, will cause massive damage to the European economy and set the EU back by years, if not decades, Ulrike Reisner writes.

Valdai Club to Present a Report ‘BRICS+ Energy: A Mover for the New World Order’
On October 18 at 11:00 a.m. Moscow time, the Valdai Club will host a presentation of the new report “BRICS+ Energy: A Mover for the New World Order” on the eve of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.
🔋 Even in the original five-country format, BRICS looked like a formidable energy conglomerate.
It included the world’s largest hydrocarbons exporter (Russia) and the largest consumer of energy resources (China). After the expansion on January 1, 2024, the group emerged as a real energy giant.
With the addition of the three hydrocarbon powers, BRICS now holds about 40 percent of the world’s proven oil reserves and more than 50 percent of gas reserves. On the demand end, the group accounts for 47 percent of the planet’s primary energy consumption, almost 50 percent above that of the G7 countries (including the European Union).
It is a hard fact that the centre of energy consumption is shifting from the developed countries, united under the G7 brand, to the so-called ‘emerging markets.’ But the scale of that transformation over the last thirty years has been truly monumental, writes Alexey Grivach, the author of a new #valdai_report “BRICS+ Energy: A Mover for the New World Order”.

🤝🔋 Energy Cooperation within BRICS: Revolutionary Resistance
On October 18, on the eve of the BRICS summit in Kazan, the Valdai Club hosted a presentation of a report titled “BRICS+ Energy: A Mover for the New World Order.”
💬 Ivan Timofeev, the moderator of the discussion, noted that although the BRICS agenda is quite broad, energy occupies a special place in the group’s agenda, since Russia is the largest supplier of energy resources, and India, China, and Brazil are dynamically growing economic giants that need larger volumes of supplies. The international situation is also favourable for expanding energy cooperation between the group’s countries.
💬 Alexey Grivach, Deputy Director General for Gas Problems of the National Energy Security Fund (NESF) and author of the report, pointed out that the centre of energy development is shifting toward the Global South, particularly the Asia-Pacific region and the BRICS countries. More than thirty years ago, the "collective West" thought that it had won once and for all and that history had ended. However, life has shattered this illusion, and now the BRICS countries are defending their positions in the world. The rate of economic growth in most BRICS countries is also higher than in the West.
In addition, BRICS is a serious energy conglomerate, which has further strengthened its position after expansion. Electricity production, which can be considered a measure of economic power, has grown in the group's countries almost five-fold. He added that in the context of sanctions pressure, the BRICS countries and all countries that want to develop without heeding the dictates of the West are faced with the task of building infrastructure, institutions, and instruments for energy trade. “Our resistance must grow, and this should become one of the main areas of BRICS’ work,” the author of the Valdai Club report believes.
💬 Nivedita Das Kundu, Professor at the Faculty of International Relations at the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages, briefly outlined India’s approach to energy cooperation within BRICS. In her opinion, the topic of the report is “very significant.” The global balance of power is now shifting towards developing economies, and this affects the political and geostrategic situation around the world, she said. Energy cooperation among BRICS member countries serves to break the Western monopoly and hegemony and advances the multilateral agenda. Das Kundu acknowledged that the BRICS group has now adopted a certain anti-Western attitude, and this raises certain concerns for India, which fundamentally adheres to a neutral position and does not want to join the blocs. However, she called the emergence of BRICS+ a good step that facilitates the transition to a new world order.

🔋 Energy for the Global South
The Global South is the socio-economic and political definition used to describe developing countries. These states are rich in a wide variety of resources, both fossil and renewable. The leaders in electricity generation among the Global South are China, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Mexico. However, there are constraints to the development of green energy. You can find out which ones and how these challenges are being addressed in our infographic.

📆 ANNOUNCEMENT: On January 16 at 11:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Valdai Discussion Club will host an expert discussion dedicated to the situation on the EU gas market in the wake of the cessation of transit through Ukraine.
On the night of December 31 to January 1, the five-year contract for the supply of Russian gas through Ukraine expired. Transit has been interrupted several times over the past 30 years. However, this time, President Vladimir Putin does not see any prospects for a new contract. “Gazprom will survive this,” the Russian leader noted. The European Commission also stated its lack of interest in continuing gas transit through Ukraine, although European officials had previously insisted on the need to maintain it.
Slovakia will suffer the most from the cessation of Russian gas supplies. Prime Minister Robert Fico visited Moscow in December in an effort to resolve the gas supply issue. Gas companies, trade associations, and large industrial consumers from Hungary, Austria, and Italy spoke in favour of continuing transit. Moldova and the Czech Republic were also among the importers of Russian gas.
❓What are the consequences of stopping the Ukrainian transit?
❓Do the preconditions exist for an energy crisis in the EU?
❓How can the countries of Southern and Central Europe solve their problems with gas supplies?
❓What damage will the termination of Ukrainian gas transit do to Gazprom?
❓How can the losses be compensated for?
The participants of the discussion will try to answer these and other questions.
🎙️ Speakers:
🇷🇺 Alexey Grivach, Deputy Director General for Gas Issues and the National Energy Security Fund
🇭🇺 Gábor Stier, Head of Foreign Policy Dpt., Magyar Nemzet newspaper (Hungary)
🇸🇰 Ján Čarnogurský, Member of the Board of Directors, Pan-European University of Bratislava (Slovakia)

⛽️ Diplomatic Pause: Reasons for and Consequences of the Termination of Gas Transit through Ukraine
On January 16, 2025, the Valdai Club hosted an expert discussion dedicated to the situation on the EU gas market after the termination of transit through Ukraine.
💬 Anton Bespalov, the moderator of the discussion, noted that over the past three years, the situation on the gas market has undergone tectonic changes. At one point, Western public opinion was frightened by the weaponisation of Russian energy supplies to Europe, but today it is the West that is waging an energy war against Russia. For years, Russia has been trying to shed its dependence on Ukrainian gas transit, and today Ukraine and Europe are presenting its termination as their victory. According to the European Commission, the European Union is well prepared to terminate the transit, but many in the EU do not agree with this and expect severe economic consequences.
💬 Jan Čarnogurský, a member of the board of directors of the Pan-European University of Bratislava, suggests that the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine will greatly harm Slovakia, which relied on the route for 90 percent of its gas needs. The country will survive this winter and in the near future thanks to full gas storage facilities and the Turkish Stream, but the latter's capacity is definitely not enough for all the countries that wish to access it. Slovakia can only receive a third of the gas it needs through it, Čarnogursky emphasized. In this regard, Slovakia is capable of responding harshly to Ukraine's cessation of transit.
💬 Alexey Grivach, Deputy Director General of the National Energy Security Fund, called what is happening part of a diplomatic game, or rather a diplomatic pause, related to the change of power in the United States. "From the point of view of energy security, this is only a critical issue for gas supplies to Moldova and Transnistria," he added. For Europe, the consequences may become significant if the gas in storage facilities is used up. Azerbaijani gas was presented as a panacea for part of Europe, but now there are problems with its supply. Grivach does not believe that the history of Ukrainian transit is completely over and allows for new negotiations in the future.
💬 Gabor Stier, the head of the foreign policy department of the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet, pointed out that the stoppage of transit was not unexpected and did not threaten the immediate energy security of the region. From an economic point of view, it, of course, somewhat worsened the situation of all its countries, but has seriously affected only one country - Slovakia. However, in his opinion, the political consequences are more important and should be considered separately. "This unfriendly step by Kiev demonstrates the West's aspirations in the energy issue," he believes.
