πŸ—£ Is Progress Possible Without Conflict? Valdai Club Session at SPIEF 2024

As part of the business program at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), a session of the Valdai Club took place on June 6. The event’s participants explored the question of whether global and national development can occur without conflict and violence.

Andrey Bystritskiy, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club, noted in his introductory remarks that conflicts that stem from the past continue to dominate our world, yet the majority of people in the world do not wish to be involved in them and are seeking ways to avoid being drawn into them.

Fyodor Lukyanov, Valdai Club Research Director, who served as moderator for the session, pointed out that the notion of conflict as a catalyst for growth is embedded in the Western perception of progress, which is no longer the dominant perspective. He emphasized that countries with different philosophies are playing an increasing role on the global stage and invited participants to consider a world governed by different principles.

🌐 In contemporary international relations, the balance between conflict and harmony is continually negotiated.

The rise of global challenges traditional notions of warfare and necessitates cooperative, multilateral approaches. By integrating insights from neuroscience, world leadership capabilities, and international relations theory, it is possible to create a global community of shared values and attitudes among nation leaders.

Through these efforts, leaders can work together more effectively to address trade, economic and technology challenges, promote peace, and create a more just and harmonious international community, in pursuit of a more just and peaceful world, writes Rahakundini Bakrie Connie.

⏰ TODAY at 11:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club will host an expert discussion dedicated to the thirtieth anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Against the backdrop of these and many other β€œmaritime” challenges β€” piracy, maritime terrorism, infrastructure sabotage, and unresolved territorial disputes β€” the question arises:

❓Нow well does the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) correspond to modern realities?
❓What is the future of the maritime legal regime as seen by experts from different countries?
❓Based on the experience of the last thirty years, what specific benefits have participation in the Convention brought to Russia?
❓Is there a possibility that Russia will withdraw from the Convention in the foreseeable future?

These and other questions will be addressed by the participants in the discussion.
