🇧🇷 Brazil has been cautious regarding the expansion of BRICS.

The country fears that the dilution of power among new members could negatively affect its influence in the process of transforming the structure of international governance.

As it is well-known, Brazil sees obtaining a permanent seat at the UN Security Council as one of its strategic foreign policy goals and does not want to have other competitors inside BRICS.

The option for disengagement from BRICS is gaining adherents among Brazilian diplomats and is being actively promoted by sectors of Brazilian organized civil society, especially those NGOs and think tanks that receive financial support from European and American institutions.

The engagement of these sectors in the G20 events during Brazil’s Presidency of 2024 and the lack of interest in the BRICS process during Russia’s Presidency in the BRICS in the same year is another sign of alertness, writes Fabiano Mielniczuk.

🗺️ High expectations are associated with the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan this October.

They touch upon both the issues of economic and financial coordination between the BRICS countries and the further development of the BRICS value platform. In this regard, it would be interesting to turn to the origins of BRICS and recall the value postulates that were laid down as the basis for the functioning of the group. These largely determine the symbolic alternative that BRICS represents in modern world politics, and make it attractive for entry for many countries of the Global Non-West and South.

The main message of those summits – a call for a fairer, more democratic and more harmonious world order, as well as the principle of strengthening the role and influence of the non-Western world in global affairs, remains quite relevant today, writes Oleg Barabanov.

🗺️ The 2024 expansion is the most important milestone, after which BRICS found itself at a fork in the road.

It will either preserve and strengthen the quality of cooperation amid the new composition and turn into a genuine institute of global governance and dive into the formation of a more just world order, or it will become a loose and non-decision-making discussion club, participation in which is prestigious, but does not oblige its members to make any obligations or compromises, which are necessary for genuine multilateralism, Dmitry Suslov writes.

🌐 BRICS today leaves no one indifferent; its polarising influence extends to  the remote corners of the world.

For some, it is definitely a “bone in the throat”, while for others - the only beacon of hope in the raging ocean of our world. For still others, it is a complete working tool for reforming the existing world order. Regardless of the polarity of the assessments, no one ignores or denies the strong place of the association in international relations.

BRICS today is not only in great demand, it is also simply a “fashionable” project. However, this fashion for BRICS creates excessively high expectations with regards to the results of its work. This is precisely what poses the main danger for the group.

The active fans, while elevating BRICS to Olympus and ignoring the realities on Earth, very quickly cool down when the realities force them to remember that Olympus has always been dauntingly out of reach.

There are those who know that the result is achieved with sweat and blood, and that it is necessary to work hard to ensure that the aspirations of BRICS to build a more democratic and fair world order will not remain unrealised, writes Viktoria Panova, Vice-Rector of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Head of the BRICS Russian Expert Council, Sherpa of the Russian Federation in the Women’s Twenty (W20).

🔋 Even in the original five-country format, BRICS looked like a formidable energy conglomerate.

It included the world’s largest hydrocarbons exporter (Russia) and the largest consumer of energy resources (China). After the expansion on January 1, 2024, the group emerged as a real energy giant.

With the addition of the three hydrocarbon powers, BRICS now holds about 40 percent of the world’s proven oil reserves and more than 50 percent of gas reserves. On the demand end, the group accounts for 47 percent of the planet’s primary energy consumption, almost 50 percent above that of the G7 countries (including the European Union).

It is a hard fact that the centre of energy consumption is shifting from the developed countries, united under the G7 brand, to the so-called ‘emerging markets.’ But the scale of that transformation over the last thirty years has been truly monumental, writes Alexey Grivach, the author of a new #valdai_report BRICS+ Energy: A Mover for the New World Order”.
