🇨🇳🇹🇼🇺🇸 There is no doubt that the visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Pelosi to Taiwan will worsen Sino-US relations.

On August 2, in parallel with Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, the People’s Liberation Army of China began military drills in areas encircling Taiwan. Thus, by August 2022, the escalation of tensions between China and the United States peaked.

Despite the desire of the United States to shake up the situation in the Taiwan Strait, creating additional internal problems for China, Biden has not yet managed to achieve a strategic advantage in relations with China. Beijing is clearly aware of all possible risks and is taking the necessary actions to minimise them.

Therefore, one should hardly expect China to allow itself to be drawn into an armed confrontation with Taiwan, writes Yury Kulintsev, Deputy Director of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies (IFES) Russian Academy of Sciences.

🇺🇸🇹🇼🇨🇳 The visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island of Taiwan was undoubtedly an unpleasant event for Beijing. At the same time, the step was fully consistent with the spirit of modern US foreign policy.

Washington, in an effort to maintain its own hegemony and the position of a world democratic leader, is constantly testing the boundaries of other states, which, in the opinion of the American authorities, are a threat.

However, when analysing the “fourth Taiwan crisis”, it is still a constant that the PRC leadership only considers a military path in the event that the Taipei administration declares independence and the direct intervention of a third party, that is, the United States and any of its allies.

China always acts according to its own plan, at its own pace and solely in its own interests, writes Valdai Club expert Andrey Gubin.

🇨🇳 The new stage of Chinese policy towards Taiwan will most likely be characterised by the more active use of military instruments of pressure on the island.

China has been able to build a powerful infrastructure for economic influence on Taiwan, becoming a key trade and industrial partner for the island. Hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese live and do business in the mainland.

But the PRC has been unable to convert this economic influence and human connections into real political influence in Taiwan. Since the return of the Democratic Progressive Party to power in the 2016 elections, the situation in relations with China has steadily deteriorated.

From the point of view of the PRC, an extremely alarming, unbearable situation has developed on the Taiwan issue: there is a simultaneous increase in separatist sentiments inside the island, an increase  of American military assistance to the island, and an accelerated erosion of the One China policy by the United States. The answer was the mobilisation of the resources of the Chinese state to resolve the Taiwan issue in a short time period, if necessary, with the use of force.

With a formal commitment to a peaceful solution to the problem, the real possibilities for “peaceful reunification” are narrowing, writes Valdai Club expert Vasily Kashin.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 The drums of war being beaten in Washington DC are picking up tempo.

▪️ Nancy Pelosi’s ill-advised visit to Taiwan was followed by that of another bevy of members of Congress.

▪️ Only weeks later President Biden declared that the US ‘stood ready to defend Taiwan in case of Chinese invasion.

▪️ Within two days of that, US and Canadian warships were conducting another of the provocative ‘Freedom of Navigation’ operations in the Taiwan Straits.

▪️ It has accelerated the passage of the Taiwan Policy Act which aims to ‘support the security of Taiwan and its right of self-determination’.

If denying China its sovereignty over its rightful waters is to be the goal of US policy even in the eyes of the critics of current US bellicosity, the US is unlikely to be shunted off the path of military aggression, writes Valdai Club expert Radhika Desai.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 US President Joe Biden signed an executive order to launch the first phase of the "U.S.-Taiwan Trade Initiative for the 21st century”, a trade agreement between the US and Taiwan.

This will change the status quo that has developed over the past 70 years around the self-governing island.

Movement in this direction could not but provoke a negative reaction from the PRC. The country's Foreign Ministry declared the inadmissibility of such actions on the part of Washington and called on the US administration to abandon such initiatives.

The dissatisfaction of the Celestial Empire is understandable, because the conclusion of any kind of agreements between a de facto independent state (Taiwan) and a full-fledged subject of international law (the United States) can formally mean recognition of the independence of the former. In this case, this will be an official attempt on the territorial integrity of China, which means a weighty reason to prepare or start a real military conflict between Beijing and Taipei, possibly with the participation of Washington.

The United States is willing to take risks for many reasons, but it will lead to nothing but a new round of escalation of the conflict with China, writes Roman Romanov.

🇨🇳🇺🇸 While the conflict in Ukraine is still on-going and with Gaza falling now under firing and bomb shelling exchanges between Hamas and Israel, China’s security concerns are also rising, particularly to its east out there in the Pacific Ocean where challenges are on the increase.

There are still no signs of de-escalation of tension between the US and China with disagreements over such issues including the Taiwan problem, the maritime disputes China has with countries like the Philippines, and the sliding down of China’s relations with Japan and South Korea. Behind all of these issues, China sees the visible and invisible hand of the US.

The repeated statements of China on its position towards seeking a peaceful return of Taiwan to the motherland have met with open resentment by the US which has rallied up the supporting response among its allies such as Canada and some European countries.

By selling and sending weapons to Taiwan and patting on the shoulders of the regime in Taipei, the White House continues to play with its “strategic ambiguity” when it still claims that the US “does not support Taiwan’s independence”.

China seems to have exhausted its patience in continuing to play the game with the US by laying its cards clear on the tableNelson Wong writes.
