π The world around us is changing. Technology and connectivity are the driving forces. Asia is leading from the front in this change.
The vast natural resources, good human capital, geographical endowments and geo-political significance in world affairs have blessed Asia with a unique edge over other continents. This is confirmed from the rising of, at least, two powers on the Asian horizon of i.e., China and Russia.
Regional cooperation and integration (RCI) have played an important role in helping Asian countries in their development over the past 50 years. It can be improved further by peace and stability; old silk roads thrived during times of peace.
One can see heightened global competition, gradual de-globalisation, hedging of market economy, denial of technology, rise of state and nationalism. The word appears to be moving back to the era of bloc politics, writes Ambassador Raza Muhammad, President of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute.

π·πΊπ Russia literally is the granary of Asia; and Russia is the powerhouse of the world.
It might not be an exaggeration to say that more than a billion stomachs in Asia and Africa go hungry without food supplies from Russia and a couple of other countries in the region.
In the last few years, pandemics and geo-political factors have triggered a major food crisis. This crisis, dubbed the worst the world has seen since World War II, is severely impacting low-income countries and communities in Global South.
Some 50 countries depend on Russia for their food supply, particularly for wheat, maize and sunflower oils. Majority of these are poor and import-dependent countries in Asia and Africa.
What applies to food security also applies to energy security. Acute shortages in energy supplies are leading to severe stress on the countries in Global South β in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Climate challenges, pandemics, supply chain disruptions and military conflicts are not the creation of the Global South, yet the countries in Global South β in Asia and Africa - have been the major victims of them, writes Varanasi Ram Madhav, Founding Member of the Governing Council of India Foundation.

ππ Logistics and Finance in a Changing World: Challenges and Solutions for Russia and Asia
On Wednesday, December 14, the 13th Asian Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club ended in St. Petersburg.
On the final day of the conference, one open session was held, dedicated to the changes in the transport, logistics and financial sectors. Despite the fact that the session was devoted to specialised issues, the speakers could not but touch on the topic of the changing world order.
π¬ Nguyen Hung Son, Vice President for Research at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, presented his countryβs perspective on the ongoing changes. According to him, the world order that existed after the end of the Cold War was generally beneficial to the countries of Southeast Asia, which are relatively weak players on the world stage. Vietnam β and ASEAN as a whole β are not in favour of the demolition of the existing world order, but for an evolutionary path of development, anyway they recognise the emergence of new forces and factors. Speaking about relations with Russia, Nguyen noted that Vietnam is interested in its presence in the Indo-Pacific (emphasising that Hanoi shares this concept).
π¬ Meanwhile, Russia, which is under a flurry of sanctions, is demonstrating resilience, including in the transport and logistics sector. Aleksey Bezborodov, managing partner of Infra Projects, said that despite the difficulties, no company went bankrupt in transport and logistics in Russia. The volume of trade has remained the same, but the direction has changed. The bulk of trade flows moved to the Far East, primarily the Vostochny port.
π¬ Raza Muhammad, President of the Islamabad Institute for Policy Studies, spoke about Asiaβs role in sustaining global growth as the world economy rebuilds. According to him, natural resources, human capital, geographic opportunities and geopolitical importance in world affairs have provided Asia with a unique advantage over other continents. New financial mechanisms are emerging in Asia, he stressed. The currencies of Asian countries are strengthening their positions, competing with the US dollar β and this is in the interests of Russia, which is steadily pursuing a policy of de-dollarisation of foreign trade.
π¬ Alexander Korolev, Deputy Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies, National Research University Higher School of Economics, spoke about the challenges that arise in the financial sector. He singled out two groups of risks for Russiaβs financial cohesion: the physical impossibility of conducting transactions in dollars and euros and the fear of partners falling under secondary sanctions (the EU, which was previously sceptical of this practice, adopted it in 2022).

ππ So far the events taking place in Europe affect the Asia-Pacific only tangentially.
The geopolitical tsunami that emerged in late February this year in Europe has had a devastating effect on the international system and the world order in Europe. But in the Asia-Pacific, due to its geographical remoteness, the geopolitical tsunami has so far manifested itself only as small ripples in the regional space.
The processes launched by the current military-political conflict in Europe and the confrontation between the West and Russia have not yet had a fundamental impact on the Asia-Pacific, they havenβt led to a breakdown of the regional order.
At the present stage, processes continue to develop in the region. The impetus for this was largely given by the course initiated by then-US President Obama in 2009 for the βrebalancingβ of the United States to Asia as Washingtonβs reaction to the rise of China.
The demolition, restructuring or crumbling of the world order, which was first discussed in earnest in the wake of the confrontation between the West and Russia, has yet to hit the Asia-Pacific, writes Yana Leksyutina, professor at the Department of American Studies at the Faculty of International Relations at St. Petersburg University, for the 13th Asian conference of the Valdai Discussion Club.

π #AsianValdai: On December 4-5, 2023, the Valdai Club headquarters in Moscow will host the Clubβs 14th Asian Conference.
Experts from India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand, Mongolia, and Japan will come to Russia to take part. Before the conference, our foreign participants will also meet with Andrey Rudenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
The Valdai Club Asian conference will continue the discussion about the future world order that began at the Clubβs 20th Annual Meeting. In the new international environment, the role of Asian states is growing and the hegemony of the West is giving way to multipolarity. Today, not only China and India, but also Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are ready to pursue independent policymaking and have sufficient resources and flexibility.
In the context of Russiaβs confrontation with the West, Asia beyond the Middle East remains a zone of peace. There is no religious radicalism, and there are no military alliances that would initiate dividing barriers and steer foreign policy in an anti-Russia direction. Even the emergence of AUKUS hasnβt changed the situation in the region.
Structurally, the programme of the 14th Asian Valdai is designed to last two days and will include an opening and four thematic sessions, at which experts will discuss the following issues:
πΉ The most important regional development processes in Asia;
πΉ Potential for defusing international tensions;
πΉ Globalisation and regionalisation: approaches and opportunities for interaction;
πΉ Achievements and potential of relations between Russia and Asian countries in modern conditions.
In recent years, Asia has become a priority of Russiaβs foreign economic activity. Reorientation to Asian markets, the formation of new production and logistics chains, de-globalisation, regionalisation, as well as related de-dollarization and the transition to payments using national currencies have continued to shift the centre of activity and influence from the Euro-Atlantic to Asia.
Thirty experts from eight countries will take part in the Asian Conference of the Valdai Club.

The Valdai Clubβs 14th Asian Conference to Take Place in Moscow
On December 4-5, 2023, the Valdai Club headquarters in Moscow will host the Clubβs 14th Asian Conference.
π Moscow, December 4-5, 2023
π December 4, Monday
15:00 β 15:05 β Opening of the conference (LIVE)
15:05 β 16:30 β Session 1. The Most Important Regional Development Processes in Asia (LIVE)
For decades, the Asian region has been an ideal example of low international tensions, the preparedness of states to cooperate and their orientation towards economic development. The session objective is to identify the most urgent trends in the development of modern Asia, indicate the main problems, factors mitigating the negative impact of global and interstate contradictions, and potential ways of the region's development in the future.
17:00 β 18:30 β Session 2. Potential for Defusing International Tensions
The increase in international tensions along the Russia-West and China-US lines is the factor that most threatens the stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region. Russia, as well as Asian countries, is interested in ensuring that the existing conflicts do not have a decisive impact on the international environment and do not lead to the collapse of existing economic and political ties.
π December 5, Tuesday
10:00 β 11:30 β Session 3. Globalisation and Regionalisation: Approaches and Possibilities of Interaction (LIVE)
The combination of globalisation and regionalisation is one of the main features of the world economy development and institutional cooperation in the modern period. There is a growing need to better understand how the processes of globalization and regionalization interact, and how cooperation at the regional level can contribute to the preservation of a global open economy.
12:00 β 13:30 β Session 4. Accomplishments and Potential of Relations Between Russia and Asian Countries in Modern Conditions (LIVE)
The pivot to the East has been a priority direction of Russian foreign and economic policy for a decade now. It is focused on the objective growth of importance of Asian countries and regional markets in the world economy, the emergence of new technologies and demand for Russian products. Over the past eighteen months, the development of relations with Asian countries has received an additional incentive due to the crisis in Europe as well as the interest of almost all Asian states in maintaining and strengthening trade and economic relations with Russia.
