๐ŸŒŽ The wind of geopolitical change is in the Americas.

The US has been successful where other empires have always failed, that is the construction of an almost-perfect global hegemony. Such a world-extended dominion has been possible because the US has been in full control of its neighborhood โ€“ the Americas โ€“ for a century and a half. However, the very foundations of the American strategic primacy are melting as the great power competition worsens.

The key to the multipolar transition is the opening of the Latin American front, that is the shifting of the center of gravity of the great power competition from Eurasia to the Americas. The question is whether Americaโ€™s challengers will be willing or able to do so, writes Emanuel Pietrobon.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ The XV BRICS Summit in Johannesburg held in August of this year sparked a wide range of expectations regarding its growing weight in the international system.

The Summitโ€™s agenda foresaw two prominent issues to address.

๐Ÿ”น On one hand, particularly due to movements in favour of using national currencies in trade and financial exchanges among group members and other nations of the Global South, the creation of a common currency to replace the U. S. dollar as the dominant currency appeared as key issues to be addressed.

๐Ÿ”น On the other hand, the expansion of the bloc to a broader platform, taking into account the numerous requests for entry from countries in the Global South.

The geographical balance of the new additions to BRICS clearly illustrates this intention. However, just like the original group and the currently expanded BRICS+, they present heterogeneities and asymmetries that will likely pose challenges in the future for consensus-building, Andrรฉs Serbin writes.

๐Ÿšง The heated debate surrounding the issue of Latino immigration to the United States is not only an eloquent illustration of the deepening polarisation in the country.

Its context extends far beyond the migration crisis on the southern border and increasingly concerns contradictory inter-American relations and, more broadly, the prospects for the liberal democratic model of development, write Lev Sokolshik and Vasil Sakaev.

๐ŸŒŽ Todayโ€™s world has added another level of complexity to the US โ€“ Latin America relationship.

The five monopolies that Egyptian scholar Samir Amin identified as the source of strength of the US-led world order: weapons of mass destruction, mass communication, monetary and financial systems, technology, and access to natural resources, are beginning to break down.

New trading arrangements as well as the de-dollarisation efforts coming from BRICS+ call into question the financial control; advances by Russia and China have curbed US technological superiority; and even Washingtonโ€™s control over certain natural resources is diminishing.

This means that the United States will now have to rely even more heavily on its military strength and its information apparatus to exert control over what it believes is its natural sphere of influence.

The US information and military presence is likely to increase, but any true agenda of development and autonomy in the region can only be pursued through the efforts of the Latin American and Caribbean nations themselves, not via a partnership with Washington, writes Carlos Ron, Venezuelaโ€™s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for North America and President of the Simon Bolivar Institute for Peace and Solidarity Among Peoples.
