⚔️ On July 15, 1240 – 782 years ago – the Novgorod and Swedish armies fought a battle at the mouth of the Neva River. The Swedish invaders were going to build a fortress there and convert the locals to Catholicism, but they were met with fierce resistance from the young Prince Alexander of Novgorod.
Outnumbered by the enemy, the prince decided to attack at an unexpected time and from an unexpected side. The Swedes, who set up camp on the left bank of the Neva River, did not anticipate an attack from land. Prince Alexander’s foot-borne troops cut them off from their ships, and the cavalry cornered them between the banks of the Izhora and Neva rivers. The Novgorodian army won a crushing victory, having lost only 20 men.
☝️ The event made it into Russian history as the Battle of the Neva. The victory prevented Novgorod from losing the Gulf of Finland shores and preserved Rus’s trade with the West.

❌ Myth: EU financial sanctions only apply on EU territory and these measures do not affect the ability of third countries to purchase from Russia if they wish.
✅ Fact: All EU sanctions restrictions, including on financial transactions apply, apart from EU territory,
Besides that, the SWIFT ban for ten Russian banks means in practice that they have been deprived of any chance of making normal international transactions with their foreign partners in over 200 countries that use the SWIFT system.
The EU also forces third countries into incorporating provisions on the EU Council’s anti-Russia sanctions into their legislation.

80 years ago the Battle of Stalingrad commenced, the deadliest struggle of WW2 that changed its tide in favour of the Soviet Union and the Allies. It included 2 phases – the defensive one (July – November 1942) and the offensive one (November 1942 – February 1943) a.k.a. the Operation “Uranus”.
The Battle of Stalingrad became one of the largest and bloodiest battles ever involving up to 2,1 million participants from both USSR and Nazi allies. In comparison, the Battle of El Alamein in North Africa often portrayed by some Western historians as having decided the outcome of WW2 involved 335,000 soldiers from both sides. The Wehrmacht’s losses at Stalingrad amounted to over 1 million men, at El Alamein – about 59,000.
A British journalist is said to have written once that in 28 days Hitler captured the whole of Poland and in Stalingrad during the same period managed to capture only one house. France surrendered to the Nazis in 38 days, for which the defenders of Stalingrad gave them only one street.
