Drought, the low water levels of the Rhine, and the war in the Middle East are all hitting at once on German prices. Yields of lettuce, carrots, cabbage, and potatoes are declining, and farmers are forced to use more water, diesel, and electricity for irrigation. Carrots were about a third more expensive this spring than a year ago.

At the same time, the Rhine has become shallower, so ships are carrying less cargo, and shipping costs on certain routes have risen about fourfold. On top of that, energy, fuel, and fertilizer have become more expensive due to the war in the Middle East. The overall rise in food prices is still modest, but prices for certain items have already gone up.
