⌨️ Most people working on the computer with only two languages switch them with the help of the CTRL + SHIFT key combination and have no problems with that (we are talking about Windows). It may become even easier with Punto Switcher developed and abandoned by Yandex without disclosing the code.
But as soon as there are more than two languages in the system, the number of nervous key hits and stifled moans while trying to finally get the needed language increases dramatically. It is particularly painful when you have typed the whole line only to find that it is nothing but complete nonsense and you need to type the whole text from the beginning. Punto Switcher is of little help here: it gets surprised every time when told there are other languages in the world apart from English and Russian.

🇪🇺 Meet Central Europe Conference 2021 will be held virtually in a 3D version of Mars created by Prague-based developers Confer-O-Matic. The European Commission has also decided to support the Jobs Fair on Wednesday, October 13th, the first day of the three-day conference.
The Commission will be taking the initiative and inviting freelance professionals from around Europe to drop into the conference, but this time by assuming avatar form in the virtual world. During the Jobs Fair sessions between 10:00 and 13:00 on each day of the conference, freelance translators will be offered an opportunity to present their credentials to translation and localization companies from across Europe and beyond.
Due to the support of the European Commission, the first day of the Fair will be free of charge for all freelancers wishing to attend. You only need to complete the registration.

Meet Central Europe conference is a yearly conference where people from language industry meet from all over the world.
🗿 A case from practice. We have received a project in Trados Studio. The file is only one, but huge, and the deadline is close. We were forced to cut it into pieces and assign them to different translators. It is not nice, but the client refuses to give more time, there is no other way.
We cut the file with SDL Split/Merge. It generates a pack of numbered SDLXLIFF files with horrendous names. But when we try to open them, an error pops up:
Corrupt file: Missing tag information for tag with id: ...
We try to open them in another CAT tool. The first one we use, memoQ, opens them easily and apologizes for not being able to provide a preview, but it’s nothing.
Strictly speaking, Trados Studio is not to blame here: problematic files were created with a third-party application. However, it was expected to be able to handle its own format. memoQ made the best of it somehow.

The English language has an extraordinary phrase “face control.” It might come as a surprise to you that the word actually came into English from Russian. It is one example of so-called reborrowing. The term was born in the Russian language during the “wild ’90s” in CIS countries.
Back then, at a time when people in the post-Soviet countries were beginning to make big bucks for the first time, upscale nightclubs were springing up like mushrooms after warm summer rain. Bouncers, usually dressed in crimson jackets, would stand outside each of these nightclubs and allow in only people whose socio-economic status matched the club’s rank. What they were actually performing was what came to be known as “face control.”
Everything foreign was deemed expensive and worthy of respect, so the term itself appeared under the guise of an English phrase, thus suggesting that “face controlling” was something popular in the West, i.e., everyone does it there, so we should do it too because we are upper class. The interesting thing is that foreigners are actually annoyed about such sorting.
The phrase “face control” was to be imported into English later. Actually, due to the fact that it was a “loan phrase,” it was even as feis kontrol. It took some time for English speakers to realize that these were their own English words which had somehow found their way into the Russian language and been transformed. Some English-speaking people might even struggle to guess what it means and you’ll find it hard to find an English dictionary that refers to the term.

👂 In English, due to its twisted spelling, it is not always possible to exactly identify the word pronounced. What is meant by [raɪt]—right, rite, wright, write? Pronounced similarly and written differently, these words are called homophones.

🗃 This error sometimes flies out in Trados Studio when you try importing a WSXZ package exported from SDL WorldServer.
The reason for this error is simple: there is no target language in the structure of the termbase in the package. In other words, this is not the terms in the target language you lack but the language itself. Thus, you can simply delete the termbase—it won’t be at all helpful during translation. No termbase, no problem.
The method for getting rid of this error is easy:
😃 Change the extension of the WSXZ package to ZIP.
😃 Unzip the resulting ZIP archive.
😃 Delete the terminology_data.tbx file.
😃 Archive the resulting set of files into a ZIP file.
😃 Change the extension of the ZIP file into WSXZ.
If you use Total Commander, you can remove a file from the archive directly, without renaming and unzipping.
After these operations, the WSXZ package will open without issues in Trados Studio.

Did you know? Just as you copy and paste the text itself, you can copy and "paste" its format. The only change is adding the SHIFT key to the same shortcuts:
😃 Copy text: CTRL + C
😃 Copy format: CTRL + SHIFT + C
😃 Paste text: CTRL + V
😃 Paste format: CTRL + SHIFT + V
In other words, you can copy, for example, “COURIER NEW + bold + underlined,” and then apply (“paste”) this format to another text fragment.
