💻 Microsoft has been everywhere lately, so here’s some linguistic news about its products:
😃 Word 365 has got a shortcut for pasting text without formatting: that is, just text, without italics, color, underlines, etc. This command is invoked by the shortcut CTRL + SHIFT + V and is very useful when copying text from a web page into Word.
Users who are well acquainted with Word immediately get worried: wait a minute, but this shortcut has already been assigned to the “apply copied format” command, what happens now? Well, now it goes like this:
—copy format: CTRL + ALT + C
—apply format: CTRL + ALT + V
On Macs, respectively, CMD is used everywhere instead of CTRL.
Actually, pasting text without formatting has been around for a long time in PowerToys.
😃 Having invested a lot of money in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, Microsoft started to implement it everywhere. The most convenient way to communicate with it is via Skype.
To enable ChatGPT in Skype, find there an authorized user with the Bing name, add them to your contacts, and add yourself to the waiting list. You’ll soon be able to chat with them as if they were a regular contact.
😃 Microsoft Translator app for iOS has been updated. The speech identification mechanism has been improved, optical recognition is now online, and you can transcribe the speech of a specific person in a group. The Android app is next to be updated.
In addition, 13 African languages have been added to Microsoft Translator (all of it, not only for iOS).

🌏 Linguogeographic notes:
In 1542, two islands of the archipelago, which would receive the name of the Philippines later,—Leyte and Samar—were named Felipinas after Philip (Felipe) II, the king of Spain at that time. After that, the name of “the Philippines” (Las Islas Filipinas) was extended to the whole archipelago.
Up to 1989, for almost 400 years, the Philippines have been a Spanish colony. But before the start of the 21st century, most Spanish people had been kicked away from the archipelago, and the Spanish language had left with them. Today, only 3% of Filipinos speak Spanish, particularly its local version. The influence of Spanish can still be noticed, but it isn’t even recognized as an official language: the official languages of the Philippines are English and Tagalog.
The correct English name of this country is the Philippines or fully the Republic of the Philippines. Wrong names: Phillippines, Phillipines, Philipines, and any other variants with F (Filippines).

💁♂️ ChatGPT drove the whole world crazy. No sooner had OpenAI released version 4, than all AI hell broke loose:
😃 Duolingo introduced Duolingo Max, a subscription option where an AI interlocutor can explain to the user why a particular answer is correct or wrong and just chat with them.
😃 GPT-4 has become available on Bing immediately. As it turned out, it had already been secretly used there earlier.
😃 An AI chatbot will appear even in CrowdIn. The beta version is currently being tested.
😃 Paul Filkin is trying to construct regular expressions using GPT—and on the 5th attempt, AI managed to create a query that adds thousand separators to multi-digit numbers.

📤 A quick reference on how to create files of different types in memoQ (the file is assumed to be already translated).
Right-click any file (or several selected files) on the Project home tab in the memoQ interface, then select what you need:
😃 To create an MQXLZ file: Export > Export Bilingual > memoQ XLIFF > check the Save a compressed file box.
😃 To create an MQXLIFF file: Export > Export Bilingual > memoQ XLIFF > uncheck the Save a compressed file box.
😃 To create an MQBACK file: right-click the memoQ file > Deliver/Return. Please note: this command works only in an offline project! In an online one, the command will upload the file to the server and close it in the current role, so don’t take offense.
😃 To convert a memoQ file to the Trados Word format (as if it was translated into Word using Trados 2007): Export > Export Bilingual > Trados DOC/RTF.
😃 To create a clean file: Export > Export (Stored Path).

📝 The Sketch Engine platform has developed a plug-in for Trados Studio.
Once installed, it allows you to see how the selected term is used by native speakers, how it is usually translated, what words it is most often combined with, and what synonyms it can be replaced with directly while translating.
The plug-in works with Trados Studio 2022 and can be downloaded from here. The plug-in itself is free, but—unfortunately—it requires a free 30-day or a paid subscription to Sketch Engine.

📧 This post is not about translation, but most of us use email addresses in our work, and here are some useful links related to them:
😃 Have I Been Pwned? is the most famous service that helps you check if your email address is on the list of mailboxes whose passwords have been figured out by bad people. Check your email addresses right now.
😃 How to quickly determine whether you are receiving emails from a regular or suspicious address: enter it on the Simple Email Reputation website. The service quickly checks whether the address appears in various block lists (this is a bad sign), whether it is used for registration of user profiles on social networks (this is a good sign), etc.
😃 Some tips on how to avoid being treated with suspicion or contempt because of your email address.

⚙️ Perhaps, everyone knows how to insert a line break in a Word document: with the Shift+Enter command (not to be confused with Ctrl+Enter, which inserts a page break).
If you need to replace line breaks with something in Word or, vice versa, replace something with line breaks, you can select this character in the list of special characters by expanding the Find & Replace dialog box (called with Ctrl+H). Or you can simply enter its code (^l) in the window field. It works only in Word.
Not everyone knows how to insert a line break in an Excel table cell, but it is simple: just use the Alt+Enter command. This way, you can break the text inside the cell into paragraphs.
Very few people know how to make line break replacements in Excel. In Excel, there is no Special Characters button in the Find & Replace window, the Word code does not work, copying and pasting this character will not work either.
But you can do it with the Ctrl+J command. After that, nothing will change in the field, but the replacement will be done properly.
For some reason, Microsoft hid this simple information in the depths of its help articles, so you won’t find it easily even using the search function.

❗️ Sad news for everyone who translates in the IT industry: starting June 2023, Microsoft Language Portal will stop providing access to its free language portal. It now bears a fearsome red notice:
Terminology Research Portal will be deprecated by June FY’23. Please direct all UI string related queries to respective product teams.
It is worth exporting the terms of the languages you need in TBX format while it is still possible.
General Microsoft style guides can be downloaded here.
