Chinese smartphone brand OnePlus illegally hired 70 engineers in Taiwan, Founder Liu Zuohu (Pete Lau) is wanted.

Taiwan prosecutors have indicted two Taiwanese executives for violating the Cross-Strait Relations Act by assisting OnePlus in illegally operating an R&D center in Taiwan.

OnePlus founder Liu Zuohu (Pete Lau) faces an arrest warrant for his alleged role in the scheme. From 2015 to 2021, the company secretly recruited over 70 Taiwanese engineers to develop and test mobile phone software exclusively for OnePlus, without obtaining the required government approval for mainland Chinese business activities on the island.

To conceal the operation, OnePlus set up a disguised Taiwan branch through a Hong Kong shell company—initially named OnePlus Hong Kong, later renamed Hong Kong Sonar (or Sonic Sky) Consultancy. Between 2015 and 2021, Shenzhen OnePlus funneled approximately NT$2.3 billion (about US$73 million) to this entity under the guise of payments for “entrusted R&D” and asset sales, covering salaries, recruitment, and equipment costs.

The Taiwan branch had no independent clients and functioned solely as a hidden extension of OnePlus, with all directions coming from Liu and headquarters in Shenzhen. The entity was reportedly dissolved around 2022.
