The project will add a new five-tier, dual-track ship lock alongside the existing facilities at the Three Gorges Dam and upgrade navigation infrastructure at a downstream dam.

Once completed, it is expected to nearly double annual cargo throughput capacity at the Three Gorges complex to 336 million tonnes, meeting shipping demands.

Chinese officials say the new lock will set world records for inland ship-lock construction in vessel dimensions, chamber size, and excavation volume.

The project also includes environmental measures such as dedicated fish passages and construction techniques designed to reduce impacts on aquatic ecosystems.

If we get to this deal, it's going to be a home run, a win for the American people.
