While engineering units were constructing bridges and opening routes through dense terrain for military vehicles and fuel convoys, the Israeli Air Force carried out a special parachute supply operation using Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft.

Located roughly 300 kilometers from Kaliningrad, Gotland is considered vital for controlling movement across the Baltic Sea.

Swedish defense officials say that if Russia were to seize the island and deploy air-defense systems there, it could threaten NATO reinforcement routes to the Baltic states and Finland. Conversely, NATO control of Gotland would help restrict Russian naval access and enable strikes deeper into Russian territory.

Last week, Sweden held its first NATO-coordinated military exercise on the island since joining the alliance in 2024, involving around 18,000 troops from 13 countries. The drills simulated a possible Russian assault and included forces from Canada, Denmark, Finland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway, and the Netherlands.
