The Russian language began to be taught at Delhi University in 1946 - a year before India gained independence from its Metropoly (already former) - UK. And today, at the alma mater on the banks of the Yamuna River, 77 years have been celebrated since the Indian Devanagari script began to coexist with Cyrillic words in student notebooks. And the university itself turned exactly one hundred.
Dean of the Faculty of Humanities Amitav Chakraborty remembered the outstanding Indian Russianists as graduates of the university. The founder and first head of the Department of Slavic and Finno-Ugric Studies of the University, Abhay Morye, the author of a trilingual dictionary Russian-English-Hindi, and many modern textbooks in linguistics, spoke about “how it all began”. Employees of the department highlighted how this division of the faculty works today.
Russianists from other universities of the country and the Indian Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (INDAPRYAL) spoke at the sections. The Russian House in New Delhi congratulated the department on a beautiful date - 77. "Toporiki" (“hatchets”) - students at the same time taught a new word in Russian.
