🟡"Ice of the Kara Sea" by Alexander Borisov in the Orsay Museum, France
At one time, Alexander Borisov was the only one who painted polar and arctic landscapes in the most remote corners of the Russian Empire. Abroad, his works were exhibited in Vienna, Prague, Munich, London and Washington. The painting "Ice of the Kara Sea" ended up in the Paris museum because the French government bought it to decorate the Luxembourg Palace. The exhibit in dark tones is strikingly different from the other bright paintings presented in the museum.

The history of this painting is little known to the public. It is known that in 1915, the Tretyakov Gallery refused to accept the artist's work, believing that "Ilya Efimovich is no longer the same." Soon the painting ended up in Prague.

The State Tretyakov Gallery and the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts have started accepting applications for participation in the "Picture of the World" competition. Russian and foreign artists aged 18 to 35 can present their works. Applications can be submitted on the official website until March 1, 2025.

The competition is held in the following nominations: "painting", "graphics and digital art", "computer graphics and animation". The theme of the works is "The values of my people as part of the global culture of humanity".
Leading creative universities in China, India, and Africa supported the project by joining the expert council, whose members will select the applications.
The works of 14 finalists will be presented at an exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery branch in Kaliningrad as part of the V International Festival of Classical Music "Cantata".

On October 26, 1842, the Russian artist Vasily Vereshchagin was born.
Vereshchagin became famous as a battle painter during his lifetime. However, he also dedicated many of his works to the countries of the East - he depicted oriental patterns, landscapes, types of architecture and local residents. In his works, the artist was strict and truthful, showing the viewer the contrasts of luxury and poverty of the eastern countries.
In 1874–1876 and 1882–1883, Vasily Vereshchagin made two trips to India to study the life, nature, and everyday life of the country.
The result of his observations was more than 150 sketches depicting the grandeur of white-stone Indian architecture, the blue of the southern sky, and bright national clothing. The largest painting by Vereshchagin 'The Jaipur Procession' is housed at the Victoria Memorial Museum, Kolkata.
On Vasily Vereshchagin's birthday, we share his "Indian Series".

🥳 The Hermitage Museum is 260 years old!
The architectural ensemble of the State Hermitage includes the Winter Palace, the Small Hermitage, the Great Hermitage, the Hermitage Theatre and the New Hermitage. The complex was created over almost 100 years - from 1754 to 1851.
🖼 It began with a small collection of paintings by Dutch masters, which the empress acquired from a German merchant. By the end of the 18th century, the collection included paintings by Titian, Raphael, Rubens, as well as the only sculpture by Michelangelo in Russia - "The Crouching Boy".
In the Winter Palace, Catherine The Great ordered the construction of an extension - the Small Hermitage, where not only paintings were stored, but also closed dinners for close associates were held. At that time, the Hermitage became a place for discussing art, politics, and new ideas, and visitors were greeted by the sign:
"Leave all ranks outside the door."
➡️ The Hermitage remained home to the royal family until 1917. After the revolution, it became a national treasure, although its collection survived difficult times: exhibits were transferred to museums in the Union republics, and some masterpieces were sold abroad to replenish the state treasury. However, most of the collection was saved.
By the way, the Hermitage is guarded not only by people, but also by cats! The furry guards have lived here since the 18th century.
