On the results of the 46th International Kolkata Book Fair (IKBF-2023)

On February 12th, 2023, the largest book fair in Asia concluded in Kolkata. The Russian House in Kolkata with the support of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata held a series of events for Indian citizens and Russian compatriots during the 12 days of the Fair.

On February 3rd, there was a presentation of the State Scholarship Program for the academic year 2023/24. Visitors to the Russian national pavilion were interested in the variety of educational programs offered by the Russian government as part of the scholarship quota. Information brochures of Russian universities were also available at the stall.

On February 5th, the presentation “Great Names of Russian Literature” was held. The visitors learned about the peculiarities of the Russian literature as a world cultural phenomenon and the prominent writers who have defined its fundamental features - Alexander Pushkin, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Leo Tolstoy and others.

On February 7th, there was a workshop on Russian writing “My name in Russian”. Visitors to the Russian stall were acquainted with some features of the Russian alphabet and got an opportunity to write their names in Russian.

On February 8th, students of the Institute of Russian Language at the Russian House in Kolkata visited the Russian national pavilion and learned about various aspects of Russia: its culture, heritage, geography, literature, music and art. There was an open discussion about the Russian language and its current prospects.

On February 9th, an opening of a photo exhibition and screening of a documentary dedicated to the pioneer of cinematography Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein took place. On the same day there was a presentation about the history of our country, its national symbols, holidays and landmarks. The visitors were introduced to the diversity of cultures and traditions of multinational Russia. Special attention was given to the pages of Russia's military glory and its national heroes of different centuries.

To commemorate the 186th anniversary of the death of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin (June 6, 1799 - February 10, 1837), India's national award-winning artist Kingshuk Sarkar created his portrait during a live painting session, and later donated it to the Russian House in Kolkata in memory of the great Russian poet.

On February 10th, visitors to the Russian stall took part in an immersion session on Russian folk culture, dedicated to the Year of Teacher and Mentor in Russia. Irina Malysheva, a volunteer at the Russian House in Kolkata, gave an introductory talk on the features of Russian folk clothing and the original purpose of embroidery. Visitors to the pavilion learned how to use Russian wooden spoons as percussion instruments in three techniques, and also saw basic elements of folk dancing. The similarities between the Slavic and Indian spring festivals of Maslenitsa and Holi were noted and the folk game "Stream" was played as an integral element of the spring welcoming festival.

On the final day of the IKBF-2023, Russian stall held a talk on Russian folk tales. The visitors came to know about the types of folk tales, the main characters, the magical objects and their properties: the magic flying carpet, the living water, the feather of the Firebird and others. The Russian folk tale “The Enormous Turnip” was played as an improvised theatrical performance. Seven volunteers from the hall took part in it, for which they were awarded with Russian souvenirs.
