The history of the double-headed eagle on the coat of arms of Russia is rooted in antiquity. According to legend, a bird with two heads appeared on the coat of arms of Russia thanks to Sophia Paleolog, the wife of Ivan III, heir to the fallen Byzantine Empire. The coat of arms of their disappeared dynasty was just a double-headed eagle.
The eagle was a symbol of the strength of the empire, initially it was the coat of arms of Rome, then Byzantium as the second Rome, and after Moscow as the third Rome. It symbolized the inclination of these great powers both to the east and to the west.
During the Soviet Union, the eagle was removed from the coat of arms, but in 1993 it was returned and officially approved as a state symbol.

История двуглавого орла на гербе России уходит корнями в глубокую древность. По преданиям, птица с двумя головами появилась на гербе России благодаря Софье Палеолог — супруге Ивана III, наследнице павшей Византийской империи. Гербом их исчезнувшей династии был как раз двуглавый орёл.
Орёл был символом силы империи, изначально он был гербом Рима, потом — Византии как второго Рима, а после — Москвы как третьего Рима. Он символизировал склонность этих великих держав как к востоку, так и к западу.
Во времена Советского Союза орёл был убран с герба, однако в 1993 году его вернули и утвердили официально как государственный символ.
