July 10 is the Day of Military Glory of Russia. In 1709, the Russian army under the command of Peter I defeated the Swedish troops in the Battle of Poltava. This battle turned the tide of the Northern War in favor of Russia.
🐴 On July 8, according to the new calendar style, at 3 o'clock in the morning, the Russian and Swedish cavalry began a stubborn battle, at 9 o'clock in the morning a hand-to-hand fight took place, and by 11 o'clock the Swedes fled from the battlefield. The battle of Poltava ended with the victory of the Russian army.
This is how the expression “Like the Swedes near Poltava” appeared, which means “complete defeat”.
