Karelia is the northern pearl of Russia
The delightful nature of Karelia, the original culture of the peoples inhabiting it, and the architecture masterpieces attract thousands of travelers at any time of the year. Everyone will find something by preference - skiing, hunting, fishing, kayaking. "Green" routes are very popular. They include visits to parks, nature reserves and acquaintance with the centuries-old history of Karelian settlements.
Karelia is a land of numerous lakes, endless forests and unusual sights. There are about 60 thousand lakes here with world-famous Onega and Ladoga among them. Furthermore, there are
more than a hundred waterfalls in Karelia, which is called "paduny" by the locals. There is also the second largest waterfall in Europe – Kivach. The height of the waterfall reaches 11 meters.
There are viewing platforms, hiking trails and the Museum of Nature nearby. The Republic of Karelia is rich in protected areas and national parks, and one of them is Paanajarvi. People come
here to visit the untouched nature and to meet rare animals in their natural environment.
Mountain park "Ruskeala" is the main pride of Karelia. This is an amazing combination of marble mountains, turquoise rivers and greenery. One can visit the most popular places on the “Ruskeala Express”. It is a retro train that was based on the “Nikolaev Express”. The atmosphere of that time is facilitated by the historical uniform of the guides and interiors.

The mysterious Vottovaara Mountain
Vottovaara is one of the highest points in Karelia, a rock massif that attracts travelers with its unusual landscape and mysterious stone structures. There are a lot of mystical legends and mysteries connected with this mountain, and not only thousands of tourists come here every year, but also people interested in magic and esoterics. Scientists have not found answers to questions about the origin of Vottovaara.
Local residents sometimes call Vottovaara "Death Mountain" and believe that you can get to another world here. Incredible landscapes do not let this doubt: everywhere are low, but very old pines, terribly twisted birches, similar to the scenery of horror movies. There have been numerous spontaneous combustions on the mountain, adding the area even more mystique.
The boulders of unknown origin attract many explorers and tourists. There are more than fifteen hundred boulders of different sizes spread over several square kilometers. Some of them weigh several tons, but stand on other smaller rocks, as if on legs.
In addition to boulders on the mountain there are other mysteries, such as "stairs to heaven" consisting of thirteen stone steps. The stone staircase ends with a precipice, so we can only guess for what purpose nature created it.

Это более полутора тысяч валунов разной величины, расположенные на площади в несколько квадратных километров. Некоторые из них весят несколько тонн, но при этом стоят на других камнях поменьше, словно на ножках.
Помимо валунов на горе есть и другие загадки, например, «лестница в небо» состоящая из тринадцати каменных ступеней. Каменная лестница заканчивается обрывом, поэтому остаётся только догадываться для каких целей создала ее природа.

Paanajärvi National Park is a nature reserve filled with the spirit of Finno-Ugric legends and myths, which is captured even in local toponyms: the Mutkajoki River, Mount Nuorunen, Kivakkakoski waterfall.
If you read the map of the park like a Scandinavian epic, it's time for you to plunge into it.
You can get to Paanajärvi from St. Petersburg, Murmansk or Petrozavodsk, having reached the village of Pyaozersky by car. There is a modern visitor center where you can get permission to visit the park. During the day, choose the routes to explore the nature of the park, and at night, stay in a tent or rent a wooden hut.
Be sure to look for one of the iconic attractions of the park - seids, huge boulders on stone legs. According to Karelian legends, revered spirits live in them. The pearl of the park, which is framed by the Paanajärvi forests, is the lake of the same name, although there is an unprecedented number of mountain lakes, swamps, turbulent rivers with rapids and noisy waterfalls. The total area of the park is 104,473 hectares.
In Paanajärvi, biologists managed to preserve many species of flora and fauna that have completely disappeared as a result of deforestation in other places. Plants and animals of both southern and arctic latitudes live here, so Paanajärvi can be called the whole world of Karelian nature.

The main occupations of the Karelians are fishing and hunting. Thanks to these types of activities, people get meat, wool and milk. Karelians are also engaged in farming.
The people honor the traditions and believe in omens. Many of them are associated with agriculture. For example, if plants are planted under the rising moon, then they will grow faster.
It is interesting that in the diet of the people there are no fried dishes - meat and fish are marinated, dried, smoked, stewed and baked. "The calling card" is round Karelian bread. It was baked from sourdough-based rye flour. In case of a bad harvest, women had to bake bread with different additives, for example, with pine flour.
Among Karelian written monuments there is national epic "Kalevala" which is widely known and has been translated into more than 100 languages. The people are also distinguished by their embroidery, for which they use a monochrome color scheme: white and red. The embroidered ornament is a talisman.

Since 2011, Karelia has been participating in the state program for the resettlement of compatriots in Russia. During this time, citizens aged 30-35 from Armenia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine arrived in the republic.

According to legend, the pogost was built on the site of a pagan temple and has been known since 1592. The example of wooden architecture of the 16th century is located on the island of Maly Kolgostrov on the territory of Vodlozero Park and is open for tourists.
"Besov Nos"
This is a cape on the coast of Lake Onega, known for its many petroglyphs. Their age is not less than five thousand years. The size of drawings can reach 2.5 meters. The most unusual is a demon with a humanoid figure, square head, very thin neck and small curved limbs. A mystery is the Orthodox cross on his left arm. It is believed to be a later image painted by monks.
