New Year is a favorite holiday for children and adults, which gives new hopes, dreams and joy. As they say in Russia: “as you meet the New Year, so you will spend it,” so you need to move on to the next year only with a good mood.
In Russia, it is customary to put up a Christmas tree at home and decorate it with toys, gingerbread cookies and garlands. Children know very well that Santa Claus will come on New Year's Eve and put the desired gifts under the Christmas tree.
New Year's feast is an integral part of the holiday in Russia. The table on this day has always been famous for abundance: it always has Russian salad, herring under a fur coat, champagne, tangerines and red caviar. During all the preparations, people love to watch their favorite cult films.
Five minutes before the New Year, the whole family gathers at the TV and waits for the president's congratulatory speech. At midnight, when the chiming clock is heard, people make wishes, open champagne and begin the celebration of the New Year.

За пять минут до Нового года вся семья собирается у телевизора и ждет поздравительную речь президента. В полночь, когда раздается бой курантов, люди загадывают желания, открывают шампанское и начинают празднование Нового года.

Первые законодательные акты о святочных торжествах в России появились при Петре I, который и сам в них активно участвовал. После революции 1917 года все религиозные праздники, включая Рождество и Крещение, были отменены и во многом потеряли свое значение. Однако сейчас Святки – важное церковное торжество.
🌛 Несмотря на то что это христианский праздник, с ним переплелось немало языческих традиций. Например, хождение в гости, колядование, святочные гуляния.
Отдельное место занимают гадания. Гадать можно было в любой день Святок, но самыми лучшими считаются Крещенский сочельник и день перед старым Новым годом. При этом церковь не одобряла проведение любых магических ритуалов, однако изжить этот обычай ей не удалось.
