Peoples of Russia: Avars
Avars are one of the most numerous and ancient peoples of the Caucasus. According to the 2010 Population Census, there are 912,090 Avars live in Russia. The Avars history is rather long and complicated. The ancestors of the Avars were nomads for thousands of years BC, but around the 3rd millennium BC they began to lead a sedentary lifestyle, raise cattle and engage in agriculture.
The life of the Avar tribes took place in the mountains, in a halfway isolation from other tribes and peoples, which made it possible to preserve both the language and the people distinctive external features, as well as traditions and customs.
Modern Avars are successfully engaged in agriculture and winemaking like their ancestors. They proudly honor their national and cultural traditions, many know the Avar language – they do everything to ensure the people exist for many more centuries.
The national cuisine of the Avars is one of the most original cuisines of the northern Dagestan. The nutrition basis among the Avars rates khinkal. They also prefer lamb and beef, fat meat soups (e.g. shurpa or shurva), flour-made dishes and the shish-kebab.

The main occupation of Azerbaijanis was agriculture. They cultivated wheat, rye, oats, corn, and were engaged in horticulture. Azerbaijanis were famous for their jewellery skills. Local craftsmen created jewellery, blades and forged chests with patterns.
Songs and dances have always played a special role for the people. The UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage includes the art of ashiks - professional singers and storytellers. Dances of boys and girls differed. The first one performed sharp, dynamic movements, while the seсond one danced smoothly and gracefully.
Azerbaijanis are known for their hospitality. Every guest is ushered to the table and treated to tea from the national cup of armudu. The tea ceremony and sweets are invariable attributes of every feast and celebration of the Azerbaijanis. Popular folk sweets include qurabiya and baklava. The most popular national drink is sherbet. It is made of lemon, saffron, sugar, basil and mint seeds and various fruits.

In 2003 UNESCO included medieval buildings of the ancient Dagestan city of #Derbent - citadel, old town and fortresses, which protected the city from the 5th to the 19th centuries - into the World Heritage List. The site includes 25 monuments of federal importance.
The Naryn-Kala citadel was built in the 6th century AD. Its walls are three meters thick and enclose an area of 4.5 hectares. The city walls - the more ancient northern one and the southern one erected later - once stretched far into the sea, which allowed to create a protected harbor for the city. The Southern fortress wall is about 3 km long and its architecture is unique: the wall is built of large stone blocks, but it has no foundation. The walls enclose the Old City, on the territory of which is located the oldest in Russia Juma Mosque (VIII century), an ancient cemetery Kyrhlyar with the mausoleum Tuti-Bike and several ancient baths.
In 2020, the prolonged rains destroyed part of the fortress wall at the gate of Orta-Kapa, so the monument expects a large-scale and careful restoration.

Цитадель Нарын-кала возвели в VI веке нашей эры. Ее стены трехметровой толщины ограждали территорию площадью в 4,5 гектара. Стены города — более древняя северная и возведенная позже южная — когда-то давно уходили далеко в море, что позволило создать защищенную гавань для города. Протяженность южной крепостной стены — около 3 км, а ее архитектура уникальна: стена построена из крупных каменных блоков, но при этом не имеет фундамента. Стены ограждают Старый город, на территории которого расположены древнейшая в России мечеть Джума (VIII века), старинное кладбище Кырхляр с мавзолеем Тути-Бике и несколько древних бань.
В 2020 году из-за затяжных дождей разрушилась часть крепостной стены у ворот Орта-капы, поэтому памятник ожидает масштабная и бережная реставрация.

🙏 50 young compatriots from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Palestine, Tanzania and Finland will get acquainted with mountain landscapes and waterfalls, see the ancient fortress Naryn-Kala Citadel, visit one of the oldest mosques in the world and other attractions republics. The delegation also takes part in the International Forum "Hello, Russia: Consolidation of Compatriots - the Basis for Stability in the Modern World", which takes place from 6 to 9 August in Makhachkala.
🤩 The journey of the guys began from Moscow. Schoolchildren saw VDNKh, the Museum of Municipal Economy, the Museum of Victory, Red Square, Alexander Garden, and also visited the exhibition "Model of Moscow".

⛰ The final day of the participants' stay in Dagestan was dedicated to one of the oldest existing cities in Russia - Derbent. The children visited the architectural and archaeological complex "Citadel Naryn-Kala".
🏛 In the historical quarters of Old Derbent, the guys were inspired by the ancient unique history, the spirit of these legendary places.
⛴ At the end of the day, young compatriots visited the parking lot of a unique artifact of the Soviet past - the strike missile-carrier-ekranoplan "Lun", which is located on the picturesque coast of the Caspian Sea.

⛰ Финальный день пребывания участников в Дагестане посвящен одному из древнейших из ныне существующих городов России — Дербенту. Ребята посетили архитектурно-археологический комплекс «Цитадель Нарын-кала».
🏛 В исторических кварталах Старого Дербента ребята вдохновились древней уникальной историей, духом этих легендарных мест.
⛴ В конце дня юные соотечественники побывали на месте стоянки уникального артефакта советского прошлого — ударного ракетоносца-экраноплана «Лунь», который расположен на живописном берегу Каспийского моря.
