Fifty tons of garbage were collected by volunteers on the polar Heiss Island on Franz Josef Land, Russia. The waste has been lying there for decades.

Volunteers took samples of water to examine it for the content of microplastics.

They had to work in harsh Arctic conditions, the temperature held steady around 0°C (32°F). Besides, in such places it is important to be wary of polar bears and staying alert all the time.

The crater is located in the Irkutsk region. According to the legend, the supreme god Aar Toyon sent his servant, the fire eagle Hotoy, to defeat the forces of evil. The eagle defeated the dark demons, but he liked the earth so much that is why he did not return to heaven. When Aar Toyon learned of this, he became angry and burned Hotoy with lightning, and turned his nest with the laid egg into stone.

However, no one can find the exact cause of the crater. The rocks found here are limestone and shale. But there are also nickel and rare-earth metals, which may indicate a meteorite.

The only thing that has been established is the age of the crater. Scientists suggest it's about 400 years old. And the total weight of its stones is about a million tons. There is an opinion among the people that aliens tried to take a sample of the Earth and left behind a trace.
