St. Petersburg State University (https://spbu.ru/) starts accepting documents of foreign citizens for admission to state-funded seats.

In accordance with the Rules for holding an open competition among foreign citizens, stateless persons and compatriots living abroad to study at St. Petersburg State University at the expense of the federal budget allocations in the field within the quota determined by the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of 12/18/2020 No. 2150, in 2023, on November 14, 2022, St Petersburg University began accepting documents from foreign citizens to participate in the competition. Applications will be accepted until February 24, 2023.

Russian pianost and composer nomitated for Grammy Awards

The US National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences has announced the list of nominees for the Grammy Music Awards 2023. Among the contenders are pianist Daniil Trifonov and composer Sofia Gubaidulina, classicalmusicnews.ru reports.

2018 Grammy Award winner Daniil Trifonov is once again contending for the award in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category with his album ''Bach. The art of life.''

Sofia Gubaidulina's work "The Wrath of God" performed by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Andris Nelsons is presented in the Best Contemporary Classical Composition category.

The awards ceremony will take place on February 5, 2023 in Los Angeles.

In total, nominees are presented in 91 categories, including eight in the field of classical music.

In Bashkiria, there are real ancient coral reefs that used to be at the bottom of the Perm Sea. This place is located near the city of Sterlitamak and consists of several high cone-shaped hills. They are called Sterlitamak shikhans, and they are truly unique geological monuments of nature. They appeared over 230 million years ago. There are three shikhans in total - these are Yuraktau, Kushtau and Tratau. There is now a quarry on the site of another shikhan Shakhtau.

Here you can see the fossils of marine inhabitants - corals, brachiopods, sponges, etc. Geology lovers come here to add interesting specimens to their collection at this open-air geological museum. Moreover, on their slopes there are rare plants listed in the Red Book.

According to local legend, the shikhans appeared as a result of a tragic story about a broken heart. Dzhigit Ashak unrequitedly loved the girl Agidel. He looked after her and gave gifts, but the girl did not like the young man's obsession, and she decided to run away from home. Ashak ran after her and hit her with a whip, then the girl's father Ural, in order to protect Agidel, turned her into a river. Dzhigit found out about this and tore out his heart. In this place, four shikhans and a thin river appeared.

В Башкирии находятся настоящие древние коралловые рифы, которые раньше были на дне Пермского моря. Это место находится около города Стерлитамак и представляет собой несколько высоких холмов конусообразной формы. Их называют Стерлитамакскими шиханами, и они являются действительно уникальными геологическими памятниками природы. Они появились более 230 миллионов лет назад. Всего шиханов три – это Юрактау, Куштау и Тратау. На месте ещё одного шихана Шахтау сейчас находится карьер.

Здесь можно увидеть окаменелости морских жителей — кораллов, брахиоподов (плеченогих), губок и т.д. Любители геологии приезжают сюда, чтобы пополнить свою коллекцию интересными экземплярами в этом геологическом музее под открытым небом. Более того, на их склонах встречаются редкие растения, занесенные в Красную книгу.

По местной легенде, Шиханы появились в результате трагической истории о разбитом сердце. Девушку Агидель безответно любил джигит Ашак. Он ухаживал за ней и дарил подарки, однако девушке не нравилась навязчивость юноши, и она решила убежать из дома. Ашак побежал за ней и ударил плетью, тогда отец девушки Урал, чтобы защитить Агидель, превратил ее в речку. Джигит узнал об этом и вырвал себе сердце. В этом месте и появились четыре Шихана и тоненькая речка.

City paid tribute to a Russian indologist and a founder of Bengali theatre

On 27 November 2022, citizens of Kolkata gathered to lay flowers to the memorial plaque to Gerasim Stepanovich Lebedev (1749 - 1817), a pioneer Russian indologist, translator and musician, in celebration of the 227th anniversary of the foundation of the first modern theatre of India. On 27th November 1795 he established a European-style proscenium drama theatre in Calcutta, that time the capital of India.

Gerasim Lebedev first came to Madras, India, as a musician in 1785 and rendered his gala presentations for two years. Then he came to Calcutta in 1787 with great cognition to get acquainted with the life and culture of the Indian people.

He translated Spanish and French dramas in Bengali language and with the help of local guides and local actors produced the first performance of "Kalpranim Sangbodol". For the first time, a play written in English, Richard Paul Jodrell’s The Disguise, a comedy in three acts, was translated into Bengali and performed on a proscenium stage – a new innovation that came with scene settings and arches, as seen in European theatres of the time.

The memorial plaque is situated on the place of Lebedev's Bengalee Theate, 37 Ezra Street, which used to be 25 Domtollah that time.
