One of Moscow's main symbols is the Ostankino TV tower, whose spire can be seen from any part of the capital. Today, on the birthday of the place, we tell you the most interesting facts about it:
- The author of the design of the Ostankino TV tower, the main building of Moscow State University and the monument 'Motherland Calls' is the same person, Nikolai Nikitin;
- The Ostankino TV tower weighs 32 000 tons which is comparable to the weight of 400 000 aircraft or 179 000 whales;
- The height of the building is comparable to the height of a 180-storey house. There are only 45 floors in the Ostankino TV tower itself;
- The lift in Ostankino self-regulates its speed depending on whether the tower is swaying in the wind or not;
- The Ostankino TV tower is struck by lightning 30-40 times a year. For comparison, the chance of a tree being struck by lightning is 0.139%;
- Contrary to public opinion, nothing is filmed in the Ostankino TV tower itself. There are plenty of studios around which allow it.

The Khibiny Mountains are located in the northern part of Russia, on the Kola Peninsula. This is one of the oldest mountain systems in the country, 390 million years old, and at the same time the largest in the Murmansk region. The name is derived from the Finnish word "hiben" - "mountain, elevation, hill".
The Udychvumchorr Mountain is the highest peak of the Khibiny and the whole Kola Peninsula with the elevation of 1200 meters.
In winter in the Murmansk region the sun shines only for a couple of hours and most of the time the locals live through the polar night. But in the darkness you can perfectly see the Northern Lights, which brightly light up the sky. In Khibiny, far away from city lights, it looks especially beautiful and impressive even in photos.
Snow lies here most of the year; that's why a ski resort was created in the mountains back in the Soviet Union. Two slopes with unusual names - Aikuaivenchorr ("Big Woodyavr") and Kukisvumchorr - await fans of outdoor activities. Both resorts are located in the town of Kirovsk.

Горы Хибины расположены в северной части России — на Кольском полуострове. Это одна из старейших горных систем в стране, возрастом в 390 миллионов лет, и одновременно самая крупная в Мурманской области. Название произошло от финского слова «хибен» — «гора, возвышенность, холм».
Гора Юдычвумчорр — высшая точка Хибин и всего Кольского полуострова, ее пик располагается на уровне 1200 метров.
Зимой в Мурманской области солнце светит всего пару часов и большую часть времени местные жители живут во время полярной ночи. Зато в темноте прекрасно видно северное сияние, которое яркими вспышками освещает небосвод. В Хибинах, вдали от городских огней, оно выглядит особенно прекрасно и впечатляет даже на фотоснимках.
Большую часть года здесь лежит снег, поэтому в горах ещё в СССР создали горнолыжный курорт. Любителей активного отдыха здесь ждут на двух склонах с необычными названиями — Айкуайвенчорр («Большой Вудъявр») и Кукисвумчорр. Оба курорта расположены в городе Кировске.

Art exhibition dedicated to the anniversary of Vasily Vereshchagin inaugurated in Kolkata
On November 4, 2022 Russian House in Kolkata held the formal opening of an art exhibition dedicated to the 180th birth anniversary of the Russian painter Vasily Vereshchagin.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata - senior consul, Maxim Aleshin and attaché, Ekaterina Lazareva; head of the Russian House in Kolkata, Sergey Shushin and former president of the Asiatic Society, Dr. Pallab Sengupta.
The visitors were presented with reproductions of paintings by Vasily Vereshchagin and works by contemporary Indian artists.
Also, Vereshchagin's famous battle scenes and his Indian series of paintings were demonstrated in a presentation. The artist is already familiar to the Indian public, his largest work "The Elephant Procession: The prince of Wales Visiting Jaipur on February 4, 1876" became available to visitors of the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata 2 years ago, after 20 years of restoration.
The exhibition will continue until November 11, opening hours - from 3 to 7 p.m.

4 ноября Русский дом в Калькутте провел торжественное открытие художественной выставки, посвящённой 180-летию со дня рождения русского живописца В.В. Верещагина.
В церемонии открытия приняли участие представители Генерального консульства РФ в Калькутте - консул-советник Максим Анатольевич Алёшин и атташе Екатерина Владимировна Лазарева, - руководитель Русского дома в Калькутте Сергей Владиславович Шушин и экс-президент Азиатского сообщества Калькутты д-р Паллаб Сенгупта.
Посетителям выставки представили репродукции картин Василия Васильевича Верещагина и живописные работы современных индийских художников.
Также знаменитые батальные сцены Верещагина и его индийская серия картин были продемонстрированы в формате презентации. Художник уже знаком индийской публике, его крупнейшая работа "Шествие слонов. Въезд принца Уэльского в Джайпур в 1876 году" стала вновь доступна посетителям Мемориального музея Виктории в Калькутте 2 года назад, после 20-летней реставрации.
Работа выставки продолжится до 11 ноября, время работы - с 15 до 19 ч.

Since 2005, November 7 has been celebrated in Russia as the Day of Russian Military Glory. On this day in 1941, a military parade was held on Red Square in honor of the anniversary of the October Revolution. This event was an important moment in the history of our country: the whole world saw that the Red Army was not going to give up and was ready to defend its Motherland to the last. Here are some interesting facts about this significant day:
🔵 28,000 fighters and commanders passed along the paving stones of Moscow, 140 artillery pieces, 160 tanks and 232 vehicles passed. All equipment was of domestic production, because the Lend-Lease program at that time had not yet been massively worked.
🔵 The weather was foggy, which did not allow enemy aircraft to interfere with the procession. Stalin, looking at the cloudy sky, said: "We are lucky, the Bolsheviks."
🔵 The march was filmed. However, due to the access control, the film group was late for the start and missed Stalin's speech. It ended up being recorded after the parade, indoors.
🔵 Few people know that not one parade took place on this day, but three - in Moscow, Voronezh and Kuibyshev.
🔵 There is a common myth that the parade participants immediately went into battle with the enemy. Many units really went towards the front, but the main battles were waiting for them in a few weeks.

From November 3 to 8, join the International educational campaign "Big ethnographic dictation". The project allows not only to assess the overall level of ethno-cultural literacy, but also introduces the culture of the peoples of Russia. The action is timed to the celebration of National Unity Day.
Residents of Russia and foreign countries can take part. Working languages – Russian, English, Spanish. The maximum number of points is 100. The passage time is 45 minutes.
Tasks for participants under 16 years old consist of 20 questions, over 16 years old consist of 30 questions: 20 — common to all and 10 — unique for each subject of Russia, and for foreign sites – dedicated to places related to Russia.
The test can be taken in an online format on the website https://miretno.ru/en/index
