Plyos, a fairytale town, is 400 kilometer north-east of the Russian capital. Travelling along the Volga in 1888, Isaac Levitan, a famous painter, had seen Plyos and fell in love. He stayed there for three years and painted over 200 landscapes.
Since Levitan, the town image has not changed a lot. Picturesque, it still lies on the hills. Specifically for travelers, its streets have many merchant shops, styled as they were at that time. Colourful houses decorated with unique wood carvings, boats that lie on the shore and cobbled alleys create a fairytale atmosphere.
Wherever you are in this town, you can see the Church of the Resurrection. Donated by the townsfolk, it was built in 1817 to express gratitude to heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812. There is one more Church on Levitan hill. This small wooden church is depicted in the famous picture "Above Eternal Peace" by Isaac Levitan. Next to it, there is a monument to the artist, who was so inspired by Plyos.
