🇷🇺⛲️ #OTD On 20 August 1721, the first launch of the famous fountains and cascades, which are a monument of world hydraulic art of the 18th-19th centuries, took place in Peterhof.

🟣The works on the creation of the ensemble continued for two centuries. They involved outstanding architects Leblon, Miketti, Zemtsov, Rastrelli, Felten, Shtakenshneider. Thanks to their labours, the estate with small palaces turned into the “capital of fountains” - a pearl of world architecture.

🏰 Today Petrodvorets is a world-famous open-air museum city. There are 10 museums and three parks open for viewing. There are three cascades and 173 fountains in the Upper Garden and the Lower Park.

🇷🇺 #OTD, on September 14, 1959, 65 years ago, the Soviet automatic interplanetary station "Luna-2" reached the surface of the Moon, becoming the first man-made object to touch another celestial body.

🌓 Launched on September 12 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, "Luna-2" made a journey that ended in the Sea of Rains region near the craters Aristillus, Archimedes and Autolycus.

🟣The "Luna-2" mission was the second most important event in the history of cosmonautics after the flight of Yuri Gagarin, demonstrating the advanced achievements of the Soviet space program. Major scientific achievement is the first direct measurement of the solar wind and confirmation of the Moon's lack of a significant magnetic field and radiation belt.

🖋️ #OTD, on October 15, 1814, 210 years ago, Mikhail Lermontov, an outstanding Russian poet and novelist whose legacy has become an integral part of the world culture, was born. His works, combining acute social themes with philosophical reflections, had a tremendous influence on the development of Russian literature of the 19-20th centuries.

📜 Lermontov's creative path covered a wide range of genres: from lyric poems to historical novels. His pen belongs to such masterpieces as “Sail”, “Mtsyri”, “Hero of Our Time”. The author masterfully intertwined personal experiences with deep analysis of social problems, creating a unique artistic world.

🌄 A special place in the works of Lermontov is taken by Caucasian motifs. The majestic mountains, which have become a source of inspiration for the poet, are reflected in many of his creations, giving them a unique color and depth.

#OTD February 2, 1943, one of the most brutal battles of WWII and all of history — the Battle of Stalingrad — concluded.

For 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ days and nights the Battle of Stalingrad raged on the banks of the Don and the Volga rivers, and in the city proper, or rather what was left of it following merciless Nazi bombardments and stubborn defender fighting for every street, alley and house.The battle itself surpassed in scope and intensity all prior battles of WWII. During that battle, more than 2.1 million people fought on both sides.

🎖 Victory in the Battle of Stalingrad was in large achieved through superior strategy and tactics, but also due to mass heroism of Soviet soldiers, officers and hard work of all those on the home front. 112 participants of the Battle were awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
