🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

On November 9, the International Day against Fascism, Racism and Anti-Semitism, the Latvian authorities demolished and vindictively destroyed "Alyosha" in Rezekne. In the darkness, with a cordon around – as it has just already become habitual for the nationalist elite of the Republic of Latvia.

The country's leadership, confident in its rightness, would not implement its own decisions surreptitiously, fencing off from its own citizens.

Places, which are memorable and sacred for hundreds of thousands of citizens of different countries and symbolize the heroic feat of their ancestors and the eternal rest of those who did not return home, are being erased by modern barbarians – without regard to the protests of the population, ignoring the recommendations of the United Nations. But the national memory cannot be destroyed, the memory of the heart is passed and will be passed down through generations in the families of the fighters against the "brown plague".

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"The mockery of the memory of the fighters against fascism in Latvia has reached its highest point.

The authorities of the Kraslava municipality, ignoring all sorts of moral and ethical norms, have razed to the ground a fraternal military burial in the village of Šķaune, having destroyed with a bulldozer the memorial and commemorative plaques located there. It`s worth reminding that under them in the ground rest the remains of several dozens of the Soviet soldiers who gave their lives for the free and peaceful future of the people of Latvia. What is it then, if not state vandalism and desecration of graves?

This dastardly, inhumane action has been carried out despite numerous promises made by the Latvian senior officials not to encroach on burial sites and military burials. Is it worth mentioning Riga's international legal obligations in this area - the Russian–Latvian intergovernmental Agreement “On the status of burials” of 2007 and the UN Human Rights Committee resolutions containing an appeal to stop settling the score with monuments?

The Russian Embassy in Riga has sent a note of protest to the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which it condemned the barbaric escapade of the official authorities and urged them to put an end to this illegal and absolutely unjustified "war" being waged on the dead.

We are convinced that the international human rights community should decisively respond to what is happening in Latvia. No excuses and indulgences for such shameful phenomena should be acceptable in a modern civilized society."

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"Right after the celebration of the Independence Day of Latvia, residents of Sesava in the Jelgava region have discovered another act of vandalism committed on a fraternal military burial located in this settlement – the inscription "Glory to the Heroes" in Russian and Latvian has been torn off from the memorial wall.

The perpetrators of this heinous crime hardly deserve to be named people. It is obviously not worth appealing to their conscience as well as moral values - such acts bring about in the society nothing but hatred and anger.

Such cases of mockery of the memory of the fallen are the result of outright connivance on the part of the Latvian authorities, who themselves are fighting against the symbols of the memorial heritage, thus breeding a sense of impunity and permissiveness in some circles. Apparently, this is the key to successful building of a "united political nation", in the view of the authors of this idea."

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"Not be afraid of escalation", "allow Ukrainians to use weapons to target missile sites inside Russia" – no, it is not some frantic military expert who calls for such steps, but no less a person than the head of the Latvian diplomacy E.Rinkēvičs.

What is this then, if not the incitement of a large-scale war?!

With his appeals to "allow", the Minister has once again confirmed the puppet nature of the Kiev regime, which does not dare to take a step without a "go-ahead" from its Western curators.

It goes without saying that the professional duty of any employee of the diplomatic service, and especially such a high-ranking one, is not to fan the "flames of war", but on the contrary, to promote solutions to peaceful conflict resolution.

It seems that the Latvian Minister has his own, frankly speaking, very peculiar view on the essence and tasks of diplomacy in the modern world.

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"We paid attention to the petition, which appeared on the web-portal of public initiatives "manabalss.lv," appealing to demolish the monument to the great Russian poet A.S.Pushkin in Riga and get rid of the "symbols of the Russian imperialism".

We would like to remind that such renowned representatives of the Latvian nation as writer Jānis Rainis and composer Jāzeps Vītols, artist Jānis Rosentāls and the creator of the Monument of Freedom sculptor Kārlis Zāle, the first President of the Republic of Latvia Jānis Čakste and many others were educated in universities of the Russian Empire in Russian. In addition, for many years the poet Juris Alunāns, the publicist Krišjānis Valdemārs, the author of the national anthem Kārlis Baumanis, the collector of folk songs Krišjānis Barons lived and worked in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Following the logic of the authors of this petition, these public figures should also be blacklisted, as well as the monuments dedicated to them should be demolished, and their role in the development of the Latvian culture and statehood should be zeroed out."

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"From 5 to 7 December 2022, Donetsk suffered the most heavy artillery shelling conducted by the Ukrainian troops. As a result of this merciless "act of intimidation", which coincidentally occurred on the "Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine", more than 10 civilians were killed by the Kiev regime and about 50 more were seriously injured. This war crime was committed with extreme cruelty: the Ukrainian multiple rocket launchers “Grad” targeted the city center, where civilian facilities, including youth cultural and sports centers, are located.

In the Latvian information field, these tragic events were not covered at all. The local media once again, as if at the behest "from above", diligently avoided the fact that the uncontrolled supply of lethal weapons to the Ukrainian regime leads to dozens of civilians becoming victims of Kyiv shelling on a weekly basis.

Moreover, the most unscrupulous Latvian media show the height of cynicism and hypocrisy, from time to time accusing Russia of carrying out the shelling of residents of its own cities. The ability to technically carry out "self-firing", as well as the arrival vector of missiles, have long been ignored by the disseminators of such "pseudo-truth". It is obvious that some Latvian media in this case are guided by only one principle - the more improbable is the lie, more people will be willing to believe it.

For almost 9 (!) years, the "free" media in Latvia have been diligently ignoring the deaths of people on the other side of the border, justifying criminal attacks on the defenseless. And today, unfortunately, we are witnessing the continuation of this hypocrisy fair, but on a much larger scale."

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"On December 14, 2022, the Riga City Council decided to rename in the capital a number of streets named after prominent representatives of its own country.

In particular, the alley of the legendary writer Valentin Pikul, as well as the streets named after the academician and creator of modern computational mathematics Mstislav Keldysh and the Soviet military commander Detlav Brantkaln fell “prey” to the Latvian nationalists. It is worth mentioning that they devoted a significant part of their lives to selfless work for the benefit of the Latvian society as well.

However, there is nothing to be surprised at: the local nationalists have just once again proved that cultural barbarism is their hallmark, since there are not many places in the world where politicians come up with ostracizing prominent figures who left a significant mark in the world history".

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"On January 30, 2023, there took place an appeal hearing on the case of the well-known Latvian social activist and journalist Y.Alekseyev, who for many years has been subjected to politically motivated persecution for his professional activity by the republic's authorities.

As a result, due to the lack of clear evidence, charges filed under the criminal law article "ammunition storage" were completely dropped. The result, one must admit, is quite logical – the case made up in a hurry begins to simply fall apart.

Well, this once again confirms the correctness of our statements that Y.Alekseev became another victim of the Latvian "punitive justice". There is no doubt in the Russophobic context of the accusations fabricated by the local law enforcement agencies against our compatriot.

We hope that international specialized structures, in particular, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media will finally give an adequate assessment of the lawlessness taking place in Latvia and put an end to the reprisal by the republic officials of independent Russian-speaking journalists."

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"Yesterday, in Riga, the State Security Service of the Republic of Latvia detained for 48 hours a public activist and Latvian citizen Tatiana Andriets. We would like to remind that she recently arrived in Latvia from St. Petersburg, where she is currently getting a higher education. No formal charges have been filed yet. We have no doubt that the Latvian punitive authorities, notorious for their ingenuity, will certainly find what to charge T.Andriets with, who is known for her principled position on defending the rights of journalists and activists of the Russian-speaking diaspora, who are being persecuted in Latvia.

It is a shame that under the pretense of far-fetched "disloyalty", the local authorities are "strangling" the energetic youth, who just realistically assesses the deteriorating situation with human rights in Latvia and is not afraid to state it out loud."

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"Local revanchists keep desecrating the Soviet memorials.

This time, there has been attacked a fraternal military burial in Eglaine: the perpetrators have poured blue paint on the obelisk located on the territory of the burial and installed in memory of the Soviet soldiers and torn off a red star placed on the top of it.

The Embassy strongly condemns this barbaric act, which is nothing but a cowardly attempt by the local nationalists to insult the sacred memory of the Soviet soldiers, who bore the main brunt in the fight against the Nazi plague and paid an immeasurably high price for freedom in Europe.

One must admit that the cases of desecration of the Soviet burials, which have lately become more frequent, do in large part result from outright connivance on the part of the Latvian law enforcement agencies, who by turning a blind eye to such blasphemous escapades of local radicals only fuel their "enthusiasm", thereby encouraging these bigots to commit new crimes.

We call on the Latvian side to take all necessary measures to investigate this illegal action and restore the initial appearance of the memorial."

On February 10, 2023, on the occasion of the Diplomatic Worker's Day, the representatives of the Russian Embassy in Latvia laid flowers at the monument of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, who served in the Collegium of Foreign Affairs, as well as at the grave of the employee of the Consulate General of the USSR in Riga E.K.Eglit.

In previous years, it was a good tradition of the Russian diplomats in Latvia to lay flowers at the memorial stone in Ikskile to the legendary Soviet diplomatic courier T.Y.Netto, who heroically died in the line of duty. However, in August 2022, the Latvian authorities barbarically demolished this monument, having deprived us of such an opportunity.

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

On February 9, 2023, the Constitutional Court of Latvia delivered a final verdict to ban teaching in Russian in private universities. The Latvian "Themis" disregarded even the opinion of the credible European organizations – in September 2022, the EU Court of Justice addressed a recommendation to the local authorities to review language restrictions in commercial educational institutions, which are of a vivid discriminatory nature.

The Latvian government, in an effort to oust the Russian language from all the spheres of public life, is flagrantly ignoring its obligations to protect and support the linguistic rights of the national minorities.

Remarkably, the local ruling elite is of the opinion that the Russian language poses a threat to the Latvian language in higher education, unlike teaching in the EU official languages (including English). Is there anything else one should know about the "absence" of Russophobia in Latvia?"

🇷🇺🇱🇻 Commentary of the Russian Embassy in Latvia:

"We continue to closely follow the situation with the detained in Latvia public activist T. Andriets. Our compatriot has been charged with Articles 81.1 and 84 of the Criminal Law of the Republic of Latvia – "assistance to a foreign state in activities directed against Latvia" and "violation of the sanctions regime". There is no doubt that the criminal proceedings initiated by the Latvian law enforcement agencies against this young girl are of the highly political nature.

We would like to emphasize that we are in close contact with her lawyers and are ready to provide as soon as possible all the necessary legal and diplomatic assistance to the 22-year-old student of St.Petersburg State University.

Unfortunately, the Embassy's capabilities in this particular case are significantly limited. Since T. Andriets is a citizen of Latvia, the Russian diplomatic mission has no formal grounds to apply for consular access to the detainee.

We are grateful to all our compatriots and not indifferent residents of Latvia, who demonstrate their readiness to support the arrested T. Andriets both in word and in deed."
