James Sunderland is not a “good or evil” character

I feel like the whole “James is evil / he hated his wife” debate completely misses what Silent Hill 2 is trying to do.
People act like love and hatred can’t exist at the same time, when that’s literally not how human brains work especially not under extreme stress.

James did feel resentment and even hatred at some point. Yeah. But that doesn’t suddenly erase the fact that he loved Mary. Their situation was awful, she was terminally ill, he couldn’t help her, she lashed out at him, he was exhausted, guilty, and mentally drained. That kind of situation completly messes up your mental health.

And his breaking point is exactly thatttt a breaking point. Not some cold “I hate you so I’ll kill you” decision. It’s the result of everything collapsing on him mentally.
What people also ignore is what happens after.
If he truly just “hated her,” why does his brain literally block out what he did? Why does he create this whole delusion that she’s still alive and waiting for him in Silent Hill?

That’s not pure hatred. That’s guilt and trauma so intense that his mind can’t handle it.
His entire journey in game is driven by that. He’s not acting like someone who doesn’t care he’s desperate, reckless, and obsessed with finding her. Even if it’s all basically based on a lie his brain made up.

And the Maria ending doesn’t prove he moved on either. If anything, it shows the opposite, he avoids facing reality and replaces Mary with something easier to deal with. - The trophy for it is called "SecondBest" on the Sh hd collection, last time i checked.

You don’t have to excuse what he did. I’m not excusing it either. But reducing his character to “he hated his wife” just feels like ignoring all the psychological stuff the game is built around.

Idk how this Fandom has so many fans yet almost no one actually interested in psychology.

How did James actually get away with murdering Mary??

So, of course, I’ve finished the games a few times. Done the three obtainable endings. I know that Mary actually died recently, but, in none of the endings we see James getting any punishment, even the leave ending? Is there a canonical answer or what are your speculations?
