How do you actually get useful feedback on your mixes from people you know?

There was a thread recently about how hard it is to get feedback from friends and it really resonated. I put out a mix that I thought was solid, got 78 plays on Mixcloud, and exactly zero comments or feedback from anyone I actually know. A few strangers liked it which is cool, but the people in my circle just don't say anything.мI'm not expecting praise or anything, I just want to know what's working and what isn't so I can improve. But every time I ask directly I get vague responses like "yeah it was good" or they just don't respond at all. I know they're not obligated to listen or critique, but it's frustrating when you're trying to grow.

For those of you who have cracked this, how do you get honest feedback. Do you have a specific person you trust who actually knows what they're listening for. Do you ask specific questions instead of just "what did you think". Or have you just accepted that feedback from friends is rarely useful and you have to learn to trust your own ears and rely on crowd reactions at gigs.

Also curious if anyone has had success with online feedback groups or communities where people actually listen and give constructive criticism. I know this sub isn't for promoting mixes but there must be places where DJs help each other improve.

My YouTube recommendations are filled with these female DJ’s being hailed as gods by way of appearance. Their sets prove over and over just how little they put into what is being played. They put more into their appearances than actually creating meaningful music…… 1/4 notes are not that great….

Headphone Recommendations (coming from rp-dh1250s)

So I have my old dh1200s (sorry subject says 1250s) in storage from way back when. Haven’t used them in a while but I may be in the market for a new pair of headphones.

Any recommendations for something remotely in the class of these in terms of quality and bass response or should I just get some new ear pads and call it a day if they are still functional? Only thing I disliked about them is they used to hurt my head since I wear glasses but beyond that they were great from what I recall.

[PRODUCT RELEASE] ATGR DJ Touch 1 Deluxe: Ready-to-Use MIDI DJ Controller with StemsFX Control also unlocks a "hidden" StemFX in djay Pro

https://preview.redd.it/se65fpi46mog1.jpg?width=3005&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60d35a23b6c218b498aa5e6896a53b5140285bf0

**TL:DR;**
As an active contributor to the sub, I’ve received permission from the mods to post about my DJ related projects.

The And The Groove Remains Production Team (ATGR), best known for the widely used DJ Conversion Utility and a range of innovative apps for DJs, proudly announces the
**DJ Touch 1 Deluxe**, a fully assembled wireless MIDI controller with a full-color touchscreen designed for DJs and music enthusiasts. Building on the original DJ Touch 1 DIY project, the Deluxe offers a larger screen, expanded memory, and is ready to be flashed out of the box. The goal of the DJ Touch 1 project is to prevent older DJ controllers, especially those lacking features like stems control, from becoming obsolete

**User Feedback and Improvements**
The original DJT1 was well-received, but some users preferred a fully assembled unit, and others encountered difficulties sourcing the specific ESP32 board. In response, the
Deluxe offers a pre-built solution while remaining affordable.

**New Hardware Platform**
The DJ Touch 1 Deluxe features the JC2432W535C 3.5" ESP32 S3 board, offering more memory and a built-in enclosure. Because there is only one model in rotation, purchasing the correct unit on various Chinese marketplaces is straightforward (search term *ESP32 S3 3.5"*).
Firmware is specific to the Deluxe model and is not compatible with the original DJT1.
All specifications and purchase links are included in the free demo package.

**Easy Setup and Flexible Power**
Installing the Stems Plus software on the Deluxe (=flashing the firmware) is even easier using the preconfigured macOS app.

The DJ Touch 1 Deluxe can be powered via USB-C from a computer, power bank, CDJ USB port, or wall adapter, and also supports a standard 3.7V LiPo battery. When connected through USB-C, the battery charges automatically. An on-screen indicator shows the battery level when operating on battery power.

The new **Stems Plus module** allows:

* 2-Stems control on 4 decks on a single screen
* 4-Stems control for 2 decks across two screens
* 4 Stems and StemsFX control for a single deck on screen. The StemFX part only works with software that features it. A [“hidden” StemsFX feature in djay](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrGX1pQ6d8I&t=205s) is unlocked!

For software that doesn’t support StemsFX, those pads can be remapped for other functions.

**Wide Software Compatibility**
The Deluxe comes with MIDI mappings for Serato, Algoriddim djay Pro, Rekordbox, Traktor, and VirtualDJ. Using standard MIDI, it can also control video or lighting software.

Multiple units of both the original DJ Touch 1 and Deluxe can be connected to the same computer, even mixed together, since they share the same MIDI messages and mappings.

**Try Before You Buy**
A [free demo module](https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/34ir5k36iyn7qfqdziji0/ATGR_DJT1_Deluxe_DEMO.zip?rlkey=br904e6bozr7w8yp8n81xt8no&dl=1) is available with a Starter Guide which contains specifications, where to buy links and installation instructions. The demo allows limited stem control (drums on deck 1 and bass on deck 2) but can be upgraded to the full Stems Plus module.

**Connectivity and Future Plans**
The DJ Touch 1 Deluxe uses Bluetooth 5 and works with modern computers, including all Apple ARM-based systems. No additional modules are planned for the Deluxe; the DJ Touch 1 platform remains the preferred development platform. This may change in the future should sufficient demand arise.

**Where to buy**
The DJ Touch 1 Deluxe Stems Plus software costs EU 18,- (approx. US$ 20,-) and is available from the [ATGR Sellfy online store](https://atgr-production-team.sellfy.store/p/atgr-dj-touch-1-deluxe-stems-plus/).

Rate for newish DJ for first NYC wedding?

Posting for a friend who is a newer DJ in NYC, who has played for around 15-20 gigs at bars for $50 an hour. She plays just for the love of it. She’s been asked to do her first wedding and is unsure what to charge. The wedding will be 4 hours at a popular Brooklyn club. Any suggestions on what would be an appropriate rate would be? Thanks in advance!

Question for DJs — how do you usually discover new tracks from unknown producers?

I recently released my first tech house track and it made me curious how DJs actually discover music from smaller producers.

Do you mostly rely on record pools, labels, Spotify playlists, SoundCloud digging, or recommendations?

I’d love to hear how tracks end up in your sets.

Mobile DJ speakers

So I’ve been putting everything I earn from my DJing into a separate account and it’s been slowly going up. I’m finally at the point where I can buy some speakers to start picking up mobile dj jobs without renting the kit I need before the gig (with all the uncertainty that brings).

I know QSC K12.2 are the «Mobile DJ Gold standard» - at least that’s what I get the gist that they are. With a 5 year warranty it’s a pretty sweet deal - but they are expensive. Clocking in at 1100 US a piece here in Norway - it’s a decent chunk of cash to invest.

Are there any options that are in the same range as the QSC speakers but are somewhat cheaper?

My plan is to eventually pair the tops with one or two LD ICOA 15 or 18” subs.

Music style is primarily open format, leaning toward house and mostly commercial. (Wedding, corporate parties, birthday parties etc)

I'm done with Beatport

Beatsource is shutting down and merging into Beatport. Part of the merger is that we are losing the ability to download all of the songs that we have purchased from Beatsource.

\> "Please make sure to download any purchases you haven't saved before the transfer, as once they are in Beatport, you will no longer be able to download them."

I'm a software engineer. Transferring purchases is NOT a technically difficult operation. This is purely anti-consumer behavior.

What are the best alternatives for purchasing songs that I can't find on bandcamp?

A client's first dance song for their wedding is a shitty AI metal song... fuck

As the title suggest, it's a doozy. I'm currently getting all my crates in order this event and obtaining the music that they want and I can across the first dance song.

It seemed kind of edgy to me, but whatever they seem like difficult millennial emo people. And yet my alarm bells went off immediately as soon as I started listening to it. Now I'm going down a rabbit hole of this whole band. It's an AI metal band.

I'm going to put it in my contracts that I will not play AI music from now on.

Sound reactive visuals for music previews and releases

What's up DJs.. it's been a while since I've posted. Back in the day I was the guy that shared a massive acapella pack that shook the internet and had record labels sending me hella S&D's lol... if you were here for that then you know me.

By day I am a graphic designer and video editor , my DJ life has has crossed over and many of my clients are DJs and Producers.. one thing that everyone who makes music and remixes has asked for is sound reactive visuals..

The process in After Effects or Premier just takes too long for a 30 second clip. I got tired of the hamster wheel of creating these visuals and decided to put that effort into creating an app that streamlines the process. Basically took all the tools that I use in the software and built them into a super user friendly app.

You can make a visual in less time than it takes After Effects to even start up.

I haven't rolled out the full software yet, but I do have a website and beta access ready. You can sign up for early access and if you'd like Beta test for it, please reach out - I'd love to have a few trusted homies give me some feedback. Sorry to show up with a solicitation, but I do think this will help out a lot of folks who make music and would like visuals to share on social, etc.

I'd love to answer any questions if you have any

If this is something you could use, you can sign up for early access here: https://www.audiprism.com/

Biggest tip I can give new DJs. Just chill and listen to your tunes. Don't mix. Just listen and enjoy.

Get to know your music. You will end up instinctively just knowing what track works and when.

AlphaTheta just raised the red flag on Rekordbox 7.2.12. USB export is broken.

AlphaTheta has just raised a red flag regarding Rekordbox 7.2.12. It appears to have a USB export bug, and their recommended course of action is to redownload version 7.2.11, available here.

One important detail not mentioned in the email: downgrading Rekordbox alone is not enough. To ensure that affected USBs are fully fixed, they need to be formatted and exported again. For every USB that was updated from 7.2.12.

I haven’t yet been able to replicate the issue myself, but this information comes from my close AlphaTheta contacts.

Since the warning has only been sent out to DJs who updated to 7.2.12, here is the full email.

Update 04:50 PM CET

I know what is wrong and can replicate it, video is in the work

Update 09:15 PM CET

Boosting DJ Flyers on Instagram with copyright music

This seems simple. As a DJ, we want to post our flyers, promote our events, boosting the post to expand reach in the surrounding area and select a fitting track to showcase the event vibe - HOWEVER - this seems to be impossible.

If I post my still image flyer with a copyright track selected from their regular music library, and then BOOST it on instagram, the platform replaces the music I selected with some god awful selection of its own which has no relevance to the style and way off brand - very scary.

This is a niche music event - and so the music selected in the post is a very key element for the promotion. Meta's own library does not even come close to offering anything suitable.

How do DJs get around this?

DJs — how do you actually read a crowd in real time?

I’m not a DJ myself, but I’ve been paying more attention to live sets lately and something stood out to me.

From the outside, it seems like DJs are constantly reading the room — figuring out when to switch energy, when to ride a track longer, when to pivot completely.

But as someone in the crowd, it’s not always obvious how that feedback loop actually works. Most people aren’t going to come up and say anything mid-set, so it feels like you’re relying on body language, energy, maybe the occasional request (if you even want that).

For those of you who DJ regularly:

* How do you actually gauge what’s working in the moment?
* Do requests help at all, or do they usually hurt the flow?
* Are there specific signals or techniques you rely on to read the room better?

Feels like there’s a lot going on there that people outside of it don’t really see.

DJ w/ live drummer question

Really hope this is the right place to ask but what would be the best way to implement a live drummer with an artist & dj set. Im a rapper and typically either have a dj for my shows or a live band. Have a gig coming up which i would have used the band for but its for the final four and is on easter and most the musicians ik are going to be playing at church. One of them floated the idea of doing a drummer with the DJ since my drummer was still available i just wanna know the best way to go about this

Tips for adding some width & depth to an IKEA kallax?

Any tips on how to add some width & depth to the top of an ikea kallax? I’ve got a flx-10 and two 1210’s but can’t fit it all on top at the moment, even with the turntables in battle mode. Was thinking about adding an ikea tabletop and using some L brackets to secure the two together but slightly worried of putting my turntables in the area with overhang. Any ideas?

What music streaming service actually works best for taking requests on the fly?

Ive been using Beatport Link for a while for mobile gigs and its fine but the library feels limited sometimes and the track analysis can be hit or miss. I know some guys swear by Tidal for the deeper catalog. Others use SoundCloud Go for the remixes and edits. And then theres Apple Music and Spotify but those dont integrate well with DJ software without third party tools. Im curious what the consensus is these days.

Do you keep multiple subscriptions or just rely on one. And how do you handle requests for tracks you dont have in your library without looking like you dont know what youre doing.
