Biggest tip I can give new DJs. Just chill and listen to your tunes. Don't mix. Just listen and enjoy.

Get to know your music. You will end up instinctively just knowing what track works and when.

AlphaTheta just raised the red flag on Rekordbox 7.2.12. USB export is broken.

AlphaTheta has just raised a red flag regarding Rekordbox 7.2.12. It appears to have a USB export bug, and their recommended course of action is to redownload version 7.2.11, available here.

One important detail not mentioned in the email: downgrading Rekordbox alone is not enough. To ensure that affected USBs are fully fixed, they need to be formatted and exported again. For every USB that was updated from 7.2.12.

I haven’t yet been able to replicate the issue myself, but this information comes from my close AlphaTheta contacts.

Since the warning has only been sent out to DJs who updated to 7.2.12, here is the full email.

Update 04:50 PM CET

I know what is wrong and can replicate it, video is in the work

Update 09:15 PM CET
here is the full description/demonstration of the problem and how to fix it

Boosting DJ Flyers on Instagram with copyright music

This seems simple. As a DJ, we want to post our flyers, promote our events, boosting the post to expand reach in the surrounding area and select a fitting track to showcase the event vibe - HOWEVER - this seems to be impossible.

If I post my still image flyer with a copyright track selected from their regular music library, and then BOOST it on instagram, the platform replaces the music I selected with some god awful selection of its own which has no relevance to the style and way off brand - very scary.

This is a niche music event - and so the music selected in the post is a very key element for the promotion. Meta's own library does not even come close to offering anything suitable.

How do DJs get around this?

DJs — how do you actually read a crowd in real time?

I’m not a DJ myself, but I’ve been paying more attention to live sets lately and something stood out to me.

From the outside, it seems like DJs are constantly reading the room — figuring out when to switch energy, when to ride a track longer, when to pivot completely.

But as someone in the crowd, it’s not always obvious how that feedback loop actually works. Most people aren’t going to come up and say anything mid-set, so it feels like you’re relying on body language, energy, maybe the occasional request (if you even want that).

For those of you who DJ regularly:

* How do you actually gauge what’s working in the moment?
* Do requests help at all, or do they usually hurt the flow?
* Are there specific signals or techniques you rely on to read the room better?

Feels like there’s a lot going on there that people outside of it don’t really see.

DJ w/ live drummer question

Really hope this is the right place to ask but what would be the best way to implement a live drummer with an artist & dj set. Im a rapper and typically either have a dj for my shows or a live band. Have a gig coming up which i would have used the band for but its for the final four and is on easter and most the musicians ik are going to be playing at church. One of them floated the idea of doing a drummer with the DJ since my drummer was still available i just wanna know the best way to go about this

Tips for adding some width & depth to an IKEA kallax?

Any tips on how to add some width & depth to the top of an ikea kallax? I’ve got a flx-10 and two 1210’s but can’t fit it all on top at the moment, even with the turntables in battle mode. Was thinking about adding an ikea tabletop and using some L brackets to secure the two together but slightly worried of putting my turntables in the area with overhang. Any ideas?

What music streaming service actually works best for taking requests on the fly?

Ive been using Beatport Link for a while for mobile gigs and its fine but the library feels limited sometimes and the track analysis can be hit or miss. I know some guys swear by Tidal for the deeper catalog. Others use SoundCloud Go for the remixes and edits. And then theres Apple Music and Spotify but those dont integrate well with DJ software without third party tools. Im curious what the consensus is these days.

Do you keep multiple subscriptions or just rely on one. And how do you handle requests for tracks you dont have in your library without looking like you dont know what youre doing.

Living with a DJ - feels like I’m a NPC in my own home

So I have a long term friend turned housemate recently became a DJ this year, and it’s like losing a pal and suddenly living with a main character in a movie.

The only reason he ever texts any of our mutual friends anymore are requests to watch him play decks at various sets. We enjoy going but he only ever wants a crowd.

He seeks constant stimulation - always having people around to watch him play on his decks. Playing music until 4am, and the onus is always on me to tell him to quieten down instead of him knowing when normal sleeping hours are.

The house is like his personal green room and hotel - offering free room and board to as many people as possible attending his gigs. Then when home, always having people watching him play decks again. While bills go up and the place gets trashed. His guests don’t help clean up or bring any gifts.

He is a very extroverted and fun personality but it’s like his entire personality is now DJing. It is impossible to talk to him about anything else.

I‘ll probably move out in a years time because it’s simply become too mentally and financially expensive to share a house with this person.

Second-guessing a gift I bought for a DJ friend

I ordered a set of Chroma Caps for his mixer as a birthday gift and now I’m second-guessing whether or not it’s a good idea.

I planned this in advance so in the 30 seconds I saw his setup, I made note of the model and used the DJTechTools guide to get the correct number and type of knobs.

I’m just questioning now - I chose the colour layout myself with zero input. I used a picture online to plan the layout. I now realize that setups are pretty highly personal so I don’t know if this would be overstepping, or if it’s a good gift.

I still have a couple of weeks until his birthday so I can just toss them and pretend it never happened, or am I overthinking this?

Rane 70 Fader Calibration

Initially the left cut-in was sharper than the right so I tried to calibrate (swiping faders) and nothing happend, no calibration messages popped up, nada. I updated firmware and control settings program, reset, yada yada and it seemed to have fixed the imbalance cut-in but i still want to re-calibrate and see if i could possibly get a sharper cut-in.

any ideas? the unit works flawlessly otherwis.

thanks

Does your mood reflect your mix?

Today I did not get a lot done, felt tired slow, very unmotivated. Gotta take a plane tomorrow to play a gig. Preparations and stuff. Thought, might aswell play a mix, get some practise in. Absolute dogshit. Nothing worked, felt like I touched the decks in my first year of dj'ing. My question is, when you feel shit, are your mixes aswell?

Question on Twitch DJ Program

People say how signing up for Twitch DJ program restricts you from saving VODs or clips. My question is, couldn't I record the stream (using OBS, for example), and still upload that stream to say YouTube afterwards since it's my own content? Or make clips and post them to instagram still? (whether or not Youtube/instagram restricts based off copyright i dont care, just whether it is allowed or not).

DDJ-XP2 help

Received an XP2 for Christmas and have struggled to find any good tutorials on how to use most of the features.

Anyone have any resources for setup with Rekordbox, or programming it for different things?

TIA!

Hey yall recently picked up a DDJ RZ with a flight case from marketplace for $500 and was wondering if it’s worth it to keep. Before this I just had a flx4 but wanted a 4 channel and came across the RZ. I can only run rekordbox 6 on it just was just looking for input from a more experienced view.

Is this DJ Novah lady even doing anything?

Every vid and short I've seen of this lady and everything she does produces no difference in sound. She will literally 1080 a turntable, and nothing happens.

looking for recommendations for table/record shelf that can accommodate a DJM-A9, 2 CDJ-3000, 2 Technics 1200s

My current set up is a Mixars Duo and 2 1200s sitting on top of 2 Ikea Expedits shelves on their sides. Records are in the shelves underneath. I have the monitors attached on the ends of the Expedits with clamp-on speaker stands. Total length is 118"

I purchased a DJM-A9 and 2 CDJ-3000s. Unfortunately my Expedits are just under 15.5" deep and the DJM/CDJs are over 18" deep.

I know I can go the route of getting something like a butcher block or other table top and secure it to the top of the Expedits, but I wanted to see if anyone had a currently available table/shelf setup they could recommend.

I also know I could get flight cases for the DJM/CDJs (already have them for my 1200s) and set them on top of the Expedits, but I don't plan to take the DJM/CDJs anywhere and I don't like the aesthetic of flight cases on top of tables for my home.

Thanks in advance!
