What PC Builds and upgrades have you made in your life?

From what I remember

My first PC (2002ish):

Athlon 1700+ overclocked to 1496 mhz

256 MB of PC2100 ram

ATI All-In-Wonder 7500 graphics card (slightly overclocked)

40gb Hard Drive (might have added a second one later)

Windows XP

My first time having an actual video graphics card!

Second PC (2004ish):

AMD Barton Mobile 2500+ eventually overclocked to 2433 mhz

512 MB of PC3200 ram

eVGA 6800 GT. I put a copper heat sink on it and had a slight overclock on that

OCZ Modstream 450w PSU

Western Digital 250gb HDD (maybe two)

Windows XP

It was significantly faster than my old PC at stock CPU clocks, but running it at 2.4ghz was wayyyy faster. Probably the most customization I did with cooling solutions.

Third PC (2009)

I7-920 overclocked to 3.2 ghz

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme cooler

4 gb (2 x 2gb) PC3-10666 ram

ASUS P6T SE mobo

Radeon HD5850 graphics card

Corsair VX550w PSU

Antec 900 Gaming case (loved this case!)

2x 500 gb Hard Drives

This was a HUGE upgrade. I'd say the biggest performance jump over a previous PC.

Eventually upgraded to a HIS HD7950 iceq x2 graphics card. That was a good upgrade for games like Far Cry 3.

I think I upgraded the ram. Probably to 8 gb, but I don't remember.

Not too long ago, I gave this PC away and it's pretty fast for normal generic tasks.

Windows 7 (might still be my favourite)

Fourth PC (2016)

I7-6700k overclocked to 4.4 ghz

air cooled.

MSI z170a motherboard

16 gb (2x8gb Corsair DDR4-3200) ram

MSI 1070 graphics card

Corsair rm750x PSU

Thermaltake v71 large tower case.

2x 860 EVO SATA drives. (what a difference these made!), plus old WD 500 gb HDD

Windows 10

Upgrades:

1 TB Samsung 960 Pro m.2 drive (sooo much faster)

add 1 TB 860 EVO SATA drive

32 gb (2x16 Corsair DDR4-3600) ram

MSI 4070 Super 12x Gaming Slim graphics card.

Another big jump in performance. Massive when it came or media encoding. Game performance really just stayed on par as games got more graphically demanding. I think I expected a more noticeable difference when upgrading to the 4070. My gaming days were less and less anyways. I finally found my CPU was too much of a bottleneck and needed to be upgraded.

Firth PC, mainly an upgrade (2026)

Ultra 7 270k Plus

Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 (my first liquid cooled setup)

MSI z890 Gaming Plus mobo

32 gb (2x16 gb) Corsair DDR5-6000 ram

1 TB WD/Sandisc sn7100 m.2 drive. (wow these are fast!)

Reuse 3x 860 EVO Sata drives + 960 Pro m.2 drive.

Reuse 4070 Super graphics card.

Resuse rm750x PSU

Windows 11

Surprisingly not as noticeable of a difference as I expected. Yeah I can run graphics higher and I don't see slow downs, buts my limited gaming experience hasn't changed much at all. Daily tasks again aren't much faster than before. I haven't tested all aspects of the new pc and haven't tuned it up yet either, but so far this has been one of the smaller gains in general performance over my previous PC's.

Transfer file lost? recovery advice

Hi, so a while back, maybe a month or two ago, I transferred a bunch of files to an old external hard drive I have from college. I plugged in the hard drive, and dragged over a folder in order to make space on my computer. And now cant find a certain file, like, at all anymore.

It's not in the original drive or the new one. I'm 99.9% sure I didn't delete it, because I never delete my files, that's why I needed more space in the first place. And I dont think it was overwritten because the name just doesn't exist at all, and the external hard drive never had a file with that name so I dont think I would have been prompted to overwrite anything in the first place. On top of that, I always choose to skip a file if its a duplicate so I can rename it instead... IDK I am just at a loss here. I have no idea where it is or what happened to it. Is there any way to try and recover the file? I spent around 50 hours working on this document and I would love to have it back if at all possible. And unfortunately I did not have any of the windows recovery crap set up... I mean? cops can get documents from a pc that's been wiped clean right? there has to be a way to find it.

anyways. thanks for any help. I'm losing my mind and even if there is nothing I can do, It would be just as helpful to know I'm just out of luck so I can start grieving and move on. but seriously, Ill try anything.

Help my USB doesn't boot

My PC got a virus and tried to do a complete reboot, on the internet they said it was better to remove the partitions on the harddisk, so I did and now my PC won't boot the USB...

How can I fix this?

i've been wanting to get a good pre-built gaming pc (with a graphics card included if possible) since i'm too scared to build one myself.

i don't wanna get those really expensive ones that run purely on ai but i don't want one that barerly runs either. have been thinking about getting one from "Greed" but i'm not sure if they're reliable

UPS beeping even after removing the wall socket

I have Microtek Legend 1600 and I bought it 3 weeks ago. Since two days, when I shut my pc off, I turn off the UPS and remove the wall socket, it starts beeping. When I turn the wall socket ON, it stops. Essentially it just wants power all the time. There's no overload. The alarm is every 3 seconds, and it's similar to when it's running on battery. There are no lights displayed, just the alarm.

It's working properly, and even able to run on battery too, but once I disconnect it from wall socket it starts beeping.

The manual doesn't mention anything of this sort. It's like a hungry dog who needs constant food.

College laptop help

I’m going to the university of Michigan to study their integrated engineering and business program but I’ve never had a laptop before so I don’t know which one to buy. I’m looking for one that can run all the engineering software like CAD, solidworks, etc. The maximum I would like to spend is 2k. Can anyone point me towards a reliable laptop?

I need an actually free hard drive cloning software that works on Windows Server 2022

Please and thank you.

I've tried so many that either don't say up front that they don't work with this OS and I find out the hard way after already installing it, make you sign up for a free trial you still gotta put payment info for, or outright false advertise by saying they're free but then trying to make you upgrade before you can actually do anything with it.
